#1 Milano Olimpia - C Shaquille O’Neal
The obvious choice at #1 in my opinion. Is going to be an absolute monster inside from day 1, and should quickly round out his rebounding/defense to make himself a fixture on the All-League teams.
Grade: A
#2 Barcelona Regal FC - F Kevin McHale
Not sure if this is the guy I would have taken. He’s the least athletic of the top 4 picks, and probably has the most limited upside. That being said, he was the safest pick and will probably be a career 20/10 guy. Regal appears to be in rebuild mode, so I think Davis or Zo would have been the better pick here.
Grade: B-
#3 Rio de Janeiro Flamengo - F Anthony Davis
Davis is going to be a monster defensively. Flamingo doesn’t have much, so they have time to let the 19 year old grow into his talents. If they can put some PP into his offense, he’ll be truly special. I would look for him to be a fixture on the All-Defensive teams. This is the biggest risk/reward pick out of the top 4.
Grade: B-
#4 Boston Celtics - C Alonzo Mourning
The obvious pick at this point. The top 4 were obviously going to be Shaq/McHale/Davis/Zo. IMO I would have taken:
1. Shaq
2. Zo
3. McHale
4. Davis.
I like the Zo pick here though. Gives Boston a guy who is ready to compliment Paul from day 1, and still has plenty of room to grow.
Grade: A
#5 New Orleans Jazz - C Andre Drummond
Gave his 2005 1st to move up from #7 to #5 to get Drummond. Not sure I really like this move or this pick. Drummond looks to have some great ratings in INS/ORB/DRB/PSD but he is pretty weak just about everywhere else. The other big knock is that he’s not a very good athlete and really needs to get stronger if he wants to be a true center. With Parker only having two years left on his deal, NO really needs to start winning or risk losing one of the best players in the league. Might have been better off trying to get a more established player.
Grade: C+
#6 Los Angeles Lakers - G Damian Lillard
The draft has become a bit of a crap shoot, and I’m not completely sold on Lillard. He’s never gonna be much of a defender but has the potential to put up good numbers offensively. Lillard is an athletic player that should compliment Russell pretty well. LA gave up a future 1st in 2004 to move from #12 to #6, don’t think Lillard was worth another potential lotto (and Michael Adams) to move up 6 spots.
Grade: C
#7 Taipei Fubon Braves - F Draymond Green
My pick so ehh. I liked getting a future 1st to move down 2 picks. Not sure if Green was the BPA, but he was the most interesting to me. The only other guy I really gave strong consideration to was Spree, and that was mostly due to the lack of quality SGs in the league.
Grade: C+
#8 Moscow CSKA - F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Moscow made a lot of good moves/picks in the 1st round, this wasn’t one of them. MKG is going to be a great defender but his lack of offense is a little alarming for a #8 pick. With Barnes and Spree still on the board, I think Moscow reached on a project player with unique ratings.
Grade: C-
#9 Washington Generals - F/G Latrell Spreewell
Probably the guy I should have taken at 7. Spree looks to be a good wing player in a league that has a serious deficiency in that area. We’ll have to see how he turns out percentage wise, but he seems be a good perimeter scorer and defender. I have a feeling him or Barnes will turn out to be the steal of the draft.
Grade: A-
#10 Madrid Real - F Harrison Barnes
Pretty similar player to Spree offensively, should develop into a long-term starter/6th man. This team is actually sneaky good and I’m not sure Barnes will get too many minutes backing up Gallatin and Dumars. Could be a good trade piece for them to use to get more polished center.
Grade: B+
#11 Brazil Franca BC - G Vasily Karasev
I’m a little surprised he fell down this far, but I would assume his lack of athleticism scared most teams off. He is big for a PG (6’4) and will be at worst a very good back up. At #11, Franca might end up with a pretty decent PG. He was a last second addition to the draft and I don’t think many teams in the top 10 were seriously looking at him. Nice pick by Brazil here.
Grade: B+
#12 Moscow CSKA - F Kiki Vandeweghe
Have to say I like this pick a lot better than the MKG pick at #6. Considering that they added the Lakers 04 1st to move from #6 to #12, this was an all around good move. Kiki looks to be an above average scorer and should get a lot of minutes and shot opportunities this year on the rebuilding CSKA. It’ll be interesting to see how the defensive-minded MKG and the offensive minded Kiki develop alongside each other. I would bet that Kiki will probably be the more valuable player in the future.
Grade: B
#13 Seattle Supersonics - G Darrell Griffith
Kind of an eh pick here. Besides his freakish athleticism he doesn’t have a whole lot going for him. I wouldn’t expect him to develop in much more than a solid role player. If I was going to take a guard here, would have probably gone with the scoring of Toney.
Grade: C
#14 Newcastle Eagles - G Doug Christie
Another pick I’m not very high on. Again, would have probably gone with Toney over the one-dimensional Christie. The defense looks nice, but it doesn’t appear he has the offensive ability to see serious minutes for a while. Might be a useful back up at the 1/2/3 spots for a Newcastle team that needs to win now.
Grade: C-
#15 Belgrade KK Partizan - G Darwin Cook
Not a bad pick, definitely like it better than Christie and probably Griffith. The pick issue with Cook is his height, and at 6’3 he’s going to have a really hard time being an effective SG. Luckily for Belgrade, he looks to be more of a combo guard and with a decent TC should be able to help immediately off the bench. He’s a good defender and his plus athleticism should make up a little for his lack of height.
Grade: B
#16 Mexico City Titans - C Joe Barry Carroll
Was traded to Moscow as part of the Porter deal, but still a nice find at #16. He will undoubtedly get starters minutes for CSKA, and should be at worst a good 3rd big throughout his career. His limited athleticism is made up by his size and strength. I’m actually a bit surprised he didn’t go higher, but I guess the lack of solid wing players pushed people to reach for lesser talented players to fill needs.
Grade: B+
#17 Cairo Zamalek - F Jeff Ruhland
Another talented big taken in the middle portion of the draft. Cairo seems to have a pretty big hard-on for this guy and I’m not sure he’ll live up to the hype. He should develop into a very good rebounder and potentially decent offensive option. Lacks the jumping and quickness you would like to see out of a PF, but is pretty strong for a rookie. Is probably slated to be the 3rd or 4th big man for Cairo if he isn’t traded post TC.
Grade: B
#18 Mexico City Titans - G Andrew Toney
This might be my favorite pick of the first round. Toney doesn’t have a ton of upside, but he should be a scoring option from day 1. An above average 3PT shooter, we should see him at the elite status in that category very soon. The big question mark for Toney is the defense, but I think he could and should end up above average. I’m pretty surprised he fell to #18 and MC should be extremely happy to have this guy.
Grade: A
#19 Boston Celtics - C Mike Gminski
A decent back up, but I think there were still a few players with either more potential or a more developed game right now. Gminski is kind of a what you see is what you get type guy. He could be a solid 3rd/4th big man if he continues developing. Certainly not a bad pick for a team that looks to be trying to compete, but I think after some of his FA signings he wished he would have taken a guy that could back up the SG/PG spots.
Grade: D+
#20 Istanbul Anadolu Efes
Kind of like this pick, Beal has some serious offensive potential for later in the 1st. I think if he played a little more defense or had any ability to back up the PG spot he would have went 5 or 6 picks earlier. The big knock on Beal is that he’s pretty much limited to the SG position and probably won’t have the ability to play either PG or SF. He’s gonna be an above average offensive player for his career, but it should take a few years to see if he has an potential to be a starter.
Grade: B-
#21 Beijing Aoshen - F Christian Laettner
Another interesting pick. Like most of the guys that were picked after 18, Laettner has some serious flaws. Despite his size, he’s not a conventional big, but could serve as an interesting spark off the bench. Sadly, he lacks any ability to play PRD, so moving him to SF is probably out of the question. Will probably always have a place in someone’s rotation because of his ability to shoot and rebound.
Grade: B-
#22 Zagreb KK Cibona - G/F Khris Middleton
Kind of an eh pick, but with the lack of decent players at the 2/3 might prove useful as an 8th or 9th man to back up the guard spots. Certainly a few guys I liked more still available, so not very high on this pick. Jackson/Wade/Leonard/Horry/Lester all would have been preferred here.
Grade: D+
#23 Beijing Aoshen - G/F Jim Jackson
A bit like Middleton, but better. Looks to have some decent offensive ability already and should continue to improve to the point of a good back up for the wing spots. For a team trying to compete, I like him better than the four guys taken before him. Good pick by Beijing here.
Grade: B+
#24 Vancouver Grizzlies - G Ronnie Lester
This pick was quickly traded to SFW in the Hill trade. Not a huge fan of Lester, but not really any betters for a team looking for a back up PG. Lester has decent size (6’2) and athletic ability for a PG, but is almost certainly destined for a career as a back up. Best case scenario he can be a guy that can get 10-15 minutes backing up a starter.
Grade: C-
#25 Toronto Raptors - G Kelvin Ransey
Pretty much a carbon copy of Lester. Not much of a 3PT shooter and a little worse athletically. I do like his offensive ability (now and potential) a little more. Once again, probably won’t be much more than a 10-15 MPG back up at best.
Grade: C
#26 Mikawa Aisin Seahorses - G Sparky Wade
Another career back up PG, but I think he probably has the best offensive ability. Because of his size, he’s gonna be limited to PG. Too bad because he’s more a combo guard than a true PG. Not sure he’ll ever be much of a defender either. These last three picks are pretty much interchangeable, they will probably always all be end of the rotation guys.
Grade; C-
#27 Vancouver Grizzlies - F/C Meyers Leonard
Looks like he could be fun, a bit like a Laettner-lite. Don’t think he will ever have the offensive game of Laettner, but his height makes him pretty special. A 7ft who could potentially shoot 3s will always have a place in the league. He’s pretty young and I like his potential more than any of the PGs picked before him.
Grade: B-
#28 Rio de Janeiro Flamengo - F Robert Horry
Was really hoping he’d be better, but he had a real-life skill-set that would be hard to replicate in the league. He has some OK offensive abilities and equally average rebounding. It would have been nice if his PRD was a little higher so that he would have been able to play both F spots. There is some potential there, but not sure if he’ll ever be much more than a bottom of the rotation player.
Grade: C
#29 Golden State Warriors - F Rick Mahorn
For a team needing to round out an 8 or 9 player rotation, I’d give this pick a slightly higher grade. BUT GSW look to be in solid rebuild mode after the Hill trade, I would have assumed that they were going to take a guy with more potential. Mahorn is a strong player that should develop into a decent PSD/rebounding type of rotational big. He’s pretty similar to Gminski, and I probably rate him a little higher. About right for this spot in the draft.
Grade: C
#30 Minnesota Timberwolves - G Mike Woodson
I like this pick more than most of the previous 11 picks. Woodson doesn’t have much athletic ability, but he’s a good shooter who looks like will end up an above-average defender. Obviously will never be a starter, but could find minutes backing up either the G. Don’t like to give Minnesota too much credit but this is one of the better picks of the late 1st round.
Grade: B
#31 Piraeus Olympiacos BC - F Tom Gugliotta
Another pretty solid pick for the end of the 1st round. Another guy in the Laettner mold, but may have the ability to play SF in the future. Looks to be a decent scorer for a rookie and should develop some REB/D in the future.
Grade: C+
#32 Tel Aviv Maccabi - F P.J. Brown
Brown is a guy that I would have expected Boston taking at #19. Gonna be a good REB/D, but pretty limited athletically. I could see Brown having a role as the 3rd or 4th big on a decent team in the future. Probably will end up more competent than any of the other bigs drafted in the later half of the draft.
Grade: B-
#33 New York Knicks - G Rory Sparrow
I’m actually surprised Minnesota didn’t take him. He’s probably going to be limited to PG, but his defense and potential handling/passing should and could make him a valuable back up. With the league currently not having too many competent back up PGs, I like the potential immediate impact of this pick for NY.
Grade: B-
#34 Buenos Aires Boca Juniors - G Dion Waiters
Don’t think much of this pick to be honest. Can’t be expecting too much at this stage in the draft, but Waiters looks to be like a guy that will be out of the league by the end of his rookie contract. He’s pretty limited position wise and like Beal will probably be limited to the SG position. I guess he could surprise me, but there were still a few guys I would have rather rolled the dice on.
Grade: D+
#35 Aukland Breakers - G/F Terrence Ross
Not too high on him either, but definitely like him more than Waiters. His size and jumping might allow him to play a little above his ratings. I’m sure Aukland will shop him along with his 1st to try to get another player more ready to play. May be worth stashing for a few years and see how he develops.
Grade: C
#36 Beijing Aoshen - G Larry Drew
Another potential back up PG. Good shooter/decent handles/not a whole lot of DEF. I’m not a huge fan of any of these PGs taken, but most of them should be slightly better than the MIN players available for the next few years. Can’t knock this pick too much.
Grade: C
The obvious choice at #1 in my opinion. Is going to be an absolute monster inside from day 1, and should quickly round out his rebounding/defense to make himself a fixture on the All-League teams.
