Only 4 years into his NBA career, it's hard to truly make a decision about how good Barnes will be in the future. So far, we know that he can play defense and shoot 3's. In his first full season as a starter, he shot over 40% from 3PT and 48% FG. Through 17 games this season he is shooting 50%FG and 39%3FG attempting about 10 shots a game. Most of Barnes' offense thus far can be attributed to the fact that he plays for a great team. He is a well-rounded offensive player, who can score from anywhere. He has taken to posting up smaller players as a way to create shots for himself. He is a great shooter from the corners and has thus far made a career as a catch and shoot player.
Defensively, Barnes has good size and strength for a SF and can guard bigger players and also has the quickness to help out his teammates. While he may never be a true lock-down defender, his versatility should always make him useful.
Weaknesses
PAS STL BLK STA
While Barnes has been a very efficient offensive player since his disaster '13-'14 season (39%FG 35%3FG), he has not shown that he can create his own shots. It is doubtful that will ever have the ability to be a top option on a serious contender. Barnes isn't much of a passer either and has a career average of 1.4 apg.
While Barnes is a good man to man defender, he does not create many turnovers. His career average of about 1 SPG+BPG should probably continue. Don't expect much from him in that area.
The biggest question plaguing Barnes is about his potential. Thus far he has played in an up-tempo offense, surrounded by super stars in Curry and Thompson, and has been a glorified role player. That being said, he is getting serious minutes on a 17-0 team and putting up solid and efficient numbers. I think in the future we will see him as a good third or fourth player, but I don't foresee many if any All-Star appearances in his career.
