Mid-Season Breakdown
The middle of the season has hit and we take a look at who stands where. Will break down who we think are the real contenders, where awards should go, and as always a little extra fun for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Don’t get too offended by what you read, just take it for what it is. The best way to start is simply to tell you who will be in the conference finals and at this point, it’s pretty obvious to us.
In the boring American conference you’ll see the Knicks square off against the Bulls. While Harlem, Buenos Aires, and of course Minnesota have talent, there isn’t much of a case to be made against the Bulls while the Knicks have played 23 road games and are only 2 games behind the Wolves and sporting the second highest scoring average to only the Bulls. Chuck versus the front line of the New York has match-up for the ages written all over it.
Meanwhile in the ever changing Eurasian conference there is the Auckland Breakers who are quite frankly running away from everyone in either conference and on a 20 game win streak. Who they play is a bit trickier since no other team in the conference has a winning record on the road. However, of all the teams in the mix, we trust Piraeus the most to get it down in the playoffs. Nobody breaks down free throw and foul splits per 21.7 seconds better than he does.
Wasn’t going to originally go all the way to the finals but what’s fun about not doing so? That being said, we’ll take the Breakers over the Knicks in the finals as we suspect they won’t have multiple injuries in the playoffs again and can likely survive just one. Yes, the announcers jinx is upon us so you might want to call Corey and go visit some voodoo doctors down in the Big Easy.
Now, without much further ado, let’s take a look at the award races:
Most Valuable Player
1) Charles Barkley – As long as he stays healthy, this isn’t expected to be a close race.
2) Greg Oden – His improvement is incredible and the Knicks have a great one.
3) Michael Jordan – Hard pill to swallow but MJ needs to carry Barca further to win this race.
Defensive Player of the Year
1) Ben Wallace – 2.3 blocks, 1.7 steals .. that’s a tough combination to overcome.
2) John Stockton – Last year’s winner may repeat due to nearly 3 steals per game.
3) Patrick Ewing – Leads league in blocks and nearly 7 defensive rebounds per game.
Rookie of the Year
1) Bill Russell – Not many were sure to expect but nobody expected this quite yet. Elite already.
2) Elgin Baylor – Most thought he should be number one pick and he’s proving why.
3) Chris Paul – Living up to what the Celtics wanted when they took him first overall.
- Note: Sam Jones’ injury will likely take him out of the race.
Most Improved
1) Greg Oden – From very nice big to a MVP candidate is quite improved. Likely won’t win.
2) Michael Jordan – While he likely has no real shot to win, he got better across the board this season.
3) Tony Parker – Another player who took the step into elite territory but like others, won’t win.
6th Man of the Year
1) Jerome Kersey – He should likely be in starting line-up but what he’s done off the bench is incredible.17.6 ppg
2) Vern Mikkelsen – at 16/8 with over 1 steal and block per game, he’s the truth.
3) Ron Anderson – Knicks using Ron as a super sub with 13.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.1 spg.
