Coming into the season we here in the Boston organization knew it was going to be another long and struggling season. This was expected and by design to build this team from the ground up with rookies and cheaper players so that we would not get into the position of overpaying to keep average players, but that does make for some really bad basketball in the here and now.
Last season this team won 24 games, and that is looking like a completely unreachable number this season. Many have already pegged this team right into the #4 selection which will add a second superstar to a team with currently only one player of real note in rookie Chris Paul.
As of writing today, Boston is 3-24, with a 1-14 home record and a 2-10 record one the road. Much of the reason is this teams inability to guard a high school basketball team. They rank last in points given up a 114.1 a night, they also rank 35th in rebounding, 35th in blocks, and 36th in Fouls. So the easy thing to notice, is that they have little to no post game. Joe Smith came over along with a future 1st round pick for last seasons leading scorer Jeff Green in which looked like a mutually good swap with Smith being large enough to play center for this team but so far while averaging 15/7/1 he's not bringing in the wins.
The only bright spot for them has been number one overall selection Chris Paul. He leads the team in scoring (19.2), Assists (7.8), Steals (2.3), and PER (19.1). The team has had a very surprising second season from the recently extended David Wesley. Wesley, who was drafted so the team would have some sort of outside threat off the bench, however due to trades for draft selections David Wesley found himself the starter this season and raised his scoring from 11.3 to 18.7 this season.
Saying this team has had a long season already would be an understatement, but right now they continue to go out and put up little fight every night. They have lost 10 games this season by 7 points or less which even a couple wins there would have them in a better position to try and move up to the very top of the draft. It is expected that they most likely deal Joe Smith at some point to a contending team for another asset and continue to prepare for the offseason. With one almost guaranteed top 4 pick they have begun to look at the first draft class that the league announced and look at Free Agency for a chance to improve the team around Chris Paul while he grows into the role of team and floor leader.
Until then, the beatdowns will continue
