James Ray(#43)Height: 6-8 Weight: 215 lbs. Position: Power Forward Born: July 27, 1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana Age Drafted: 23 College: Jacksonville University Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
James Ray was a college star from Jacksonville University, winning Sun Belt player of the year and averaging 14ppg and 7.2 RPG for his college career. He had some speed, while not in the range to be able to guard SFs but enough that made him a tough matchup for other PFs. While he played very few minutes in his 3 NBA seasons before going overseas, his per 36 were at 14ppg, and 9.7rpg
Weaknesses
Ray is seen as one of the worst selections of all time in the NBA draft. He only started 7 games in his 103 NBA games and never averaged over 3.8ppg. Ray was a poor FT shooter (62%), and he was not a great percentage shooter naturally (42%). He was not a strong big, but ended up at PF due to his inability to guard SFs, thus making him a poor post defender in his short time (8minutes per game), and still averaged 2 fouls a game, and 1 TO per.
Notes
1980 Sun Belt Player of the Year. James Earl Ray was a surprising pick at #5 (1980), and never came close to being even a bench player. I will edit all of this if I can find his European Career Statistics as he played 3 seasons overseas before retiring for good.
