3 THINGS TO CONSIDER DURING THE CREATION DRAFT
Congratulations! You just got a new team!
Now what will you do with it?
Under most circumstances General Managers love youth when building teams and why not; they have potential, will be in the league for years, and are inexpensive. But when picking in the Creation Draft you may have some things to think about...
1) Expense.
If your team selects a 21 year old in Round 1 then you're paying him 15 million a year to grow into his skill. By that second contract they'll be 24 making 18 million starting and at 27-28, the beginning of his prime, he'll be making 21 million which is 27.5% of a team's entire salary cap. Is it possible to surround that guy with other talent?
2) Training Camps.
Don't forget that every year he is younger than 27 he is at jeopardy for a Training Camp hit. It could be smarter to select a guy who is 26-28 whose talent is solidified and value will probably not drop much.
If you end up in a position where you need to rebuild at least you can start yourself ahead by dealing a talent not paying someone to take a contract you don't want. We saw this happen a lot in Legends. Promising rookies who never lived up to the hype. The useful guys, even if they were being paid, still generated solid returns.
Attaching assets to move something that should have been an asset is something you don't want to do. It just set your rebuild back further and further.
3) Mind Your Hard Cap!
If you find a way to trade for four 1st Round picks you'll be in for 60 million just from those 4 players. That'll leave you with 20 million to fill out 9 more spot which works out to a little over 2 million per player. Without a rookie draft or any rookie contracts there is no way to find cheap useful talent easily. Remember to keep an eye on your finances otherwise you may end painting yourself into a corner.
Ultimately it's the General Manager's decision what direction each team goes. There is a lot of talent throughout the draft and I expect there to be a lot of manuevering to get specific guys. It's a great time to pick up assets important to building a new team.
