In this post I will review the available players at the center position in the upcoming Free Agency period. The players will be ranked, as well as given a designated color for the expected range of their new contract. While I won't comment on each player individually, I will include the stats for each player from the previous season.

Pink - Mid Vet Max (Starting at $18M)
Blue - Rookie Max (Starting at $15M)

Myles Turner and Marc Gasol are the top prizes in this group. Turner has been criminally underutilized in Chicago, despite posting great PER numbers. Although he is slightly limited by his athleticism and strength, Turner is one of the most skilled big men in the league. I expect to see him get quite a few MAX offers. Gasol had one of the worst seasons of his career last year and there is some fear that, at 28, he may be on the downslope of his career. I still expect him to get more than a few MAX offers. He'd be the ideal candidate for front-loaded contract. Along with Turner, I expect draft-mates Chris Kaman and Darko Milicic to get some looks for max offers. At 24, Darko has the size, strength and skill-set to be long-term starter in the league. I'm not actually sure that he's worth a MAX deal, but I'm sure he'll get one or two. Another late first, Chris Kaman will get paid this offseason. He's another guy that will surely be long-term starter for whatever team manages to land him. Arvydas Sabonis and Ben Wallace are two older guys looking at big money short-term deals. I'll be interested to see what kind of offers Wallace gets. He's still a top level defensive player, but his All-League Defensive days are surely behind him. Sabonis still looks to be an above average center and will probably get a 2 or 3 year deal in the $12-$15 Million range. There are certainly quite a few players that teams without MAX money can target. There is a nice group of non-max guys in this group. Andrew Bogut, Channing Frye, PJ Brown, and Joe Smith all look like viable 3rd bigs for a contender. Bogut is probably the most attractive of this group, and is the guy best suited to being a starter in this group.

Definitely not as strong a group as the centers, however it is highlighted by one of the premier players in the league in Greg Oden. Open looks to resign with the defending champion New York Knicks, who have made several deals to put themselves in position in resign the perennial All-Star. Despite a slight down year last year, he looks to rebound with another MVP caliber season as he rolls through his prime. Guys like George Mikan, Tiago Splitter, Kurt Thomas, and Grant Hill should all expect contracts north of $10 million dollars. Thomas is probably the best of that group, while Mikan and Hill still offer viable starters for contenders. Jim Chones is an interesting player and I would like to see what he could do in more minutes. In the most recent preseason he averaged 10.7ppg 7.8rpg 2.8bpg in only 28mpg. At the bare minimum he'd be a good blocking/rebounding 3rd big. I can see guys like Bill McGill, Robert Horry, Hank Gathers, and Rony Seikaly getting above MLE offers. Mostly the same type of player, more offense and rebounding than defense. Gathers is probably the best of the group talent wise, but he's 31 and never been much more than a 3rd or 4th forward throughout his career. I like Seikaly as well, but he'll probably never be good enough to start on a playoff team.
