(Selections 1-3 were already made)
4) Brazil- at 4, this pick has to be the best player available with the highest upside as Brazil doesn’t much talent at any position. Ron Harper is going to be an elite defender and athlete with the kills to excel above and beyond his athleticism. Grabbing a premier athlete who’s also a lock-down defender is a coup for Brazil.
5) Jazz- Everyone knows the Jazz like having a bunch of shooters, so Mark Price is an easy selection here as he can knock down the 3 at a decent clip while being a great point guard in general. He should slide right in at the point in this team and be a top player.
6) Real Madrid- Another team without any real talent so they have to go BPA with a high floor. There are 2 choices here, but the one REAL should go is Len Bias. Another ridiculous athlete with some skill, Len will be a nightmare for opposing defenses and should be able to get to the rim at will and could be an elite finisher due to his length and overall athletic ability, specifically his strength.
7) Buenos Aires- With some solid pieces in Barnes and Wilkes, this team is looking for another scorer to help out those 2. That should come in the form of Richie Guerin. He should slide in right away at the 2 and fits extremely well alongside Wilkes as 2 elite rebounding and athletic wings.
8) Milan- This team is going into full rebuild mode with franchise cornerstone Shaquille O’Neal being shipped out. They may have hit the jackpot here with Maurice Stokes. Stokes has the best combination of combination of overall skills for a big besides KAJ and will be a contributor from day 1. He will be a beast on the boards and while he will never be and elite shot blocker, his overall defensive ability is very good.
9) Buenos Aires- With a starting 2-4 set, and no solid options left at center, Buenos Aires reaches a little to select Nate McMillan. He can come in right away and be an elite defender and point guard while allowing Guerin, Wilkes, and Barnes to do all the scoring.
10) Jazz- at 10, the Jazz are celebrating Nate McMillan being drafted at 9 as this lets a great talent in Rodman fall to them. He does not fit the Jazz style of play, but the Jazz know to draft talent over fit/need and he can’t pass up the opportunity at an elite rebounder/defender that can probably move all around the court.
11) Milan- with Stokes already in the bag, Milan looks to retool his perimeter game and that starts with extremely high ceiling Drazen Petrovic. He might not be ready to come in and be elite, but Milan have the time to let him come into his own as they are not looking to compete for years to come.
12) Sharks- After being given the gift of KAT last season, the Sharks will now draft the curse of Jack Twyman, which will make minority owner Jay-Z very happy. Twyman is a jack of all trades and at this point has the best upside in the draft, which is all you can ask for at 12.
13) Cleveland- Confident in resigning Deangelo Russell, Cleveland look to add a low post presence to fit next to Gobert. Roy Tarpley does just that while also being a very good rebounder and post defender that might surprise everyone with the amount of steals he gets.
14) Beijing- I am going to roll with Tom Gola. He is a very interesting player that could play multiple positions and be an elite rebounder at all of them with some unique passing skills. He’s not your prototypical SG/SF due to his overall offense but he will be able to impact the game on other fronts and be a valuable rotation player.
15) Perth- With this pick, Perth goes BPA in Hornacek, who can play the point or off guard and light it up from outside the arc. Horny can come in at the 2 right away if Wade resigns to give him a new running mate in the backcourt.
16) Jazz- This pick should be Willie Wise, who is basically a poor man’s Ron Harper. Getting Wise here is a coup as he will be a great defender from day 1 and has the athleticism and burgeoning skills to be more than just an average regular in this league.
17) Spurs- This Spurs are celebrating that bob Dandridge has fallen this far in the draft when he can score, defend, handle the rock, and rebound extremely well while being a very solid athlete. He gives them a new type of wing and could maybe even play some 4 for them if they want to go small ball.
18) Sarawak- This pick should be Eugene Shue. He really doesn’t have a set position since he doesn’t have the passing ability of a pure PG but his elite athleticism, lockdown defense, and ability to get to the rim should allow him to thrive as an average PG. At this point in the draft, if you can get a potential average starter with the chance for more, you take it.
19) Laker- With every starting position set except the 2, the Lakers take a knock down shooter in Dell Curry. The thought process was they had the rights to his kid but were sadly mistaken. They lucked out though because Dell should give them solid shooting from the 2 while not hurting them on defense. Lowry and Dell should give them a very solid young backcourt for years to come.
20) Tel Aviv- The pick should be Brad Daugherty. 7 footers with his inside game don’t grow on trees, so he will be able to step in and be an offensive force but he really needs to keep development on the defensive end. He won’t ever be a defensive anchor but becoming serviceable will allow him to be a rotation player for the foreseeable future.
21) Eagles- with Baylor and Davis as scoring options, Eagles look to a guard who can defend and get those 2 the ball. Mack Calvin is that guy and will surprise everyone with his athletic ability as well as ability to attack the rim. One jump and Mack Calvin is a very good starting guard in this league. Mack Calvin is also a very fun name to say.
22) Belgrade- Ken Sears is still here and he’s the man to go with. A PF/SF who is pretty athletic, can rebound and play defense both in the post and on the perimeter is a good get at 22. When you add in his offensive skill set, Sears might just be the steal of the draft at this juncture.
23) Brazil- with an athletic 2/3 in Harper already there, Brazil grabs athletic combo guard Sandro Riminucci to run the court with Harper. Sandro can do everything average, but should perform above his ratings with his athletics being so high.
24) Mikawa- this may be a bit of a reach but my scout has Scott Skiles potential through the roof. Unfortunately he‘s quite the project but if he comes close to reaching his potential, he is an above average starter at a position scarce of talent. At this point in the draft, it’s worth the gamble.
25) Piraeus- selecting Jan Jobrovsky gives Piraeus some depth at the 2-4 while providing some solid scoring and a little bit of defense. With them having really no holes to fill, they go BPA with this pick.
26) Vikings- This guy kind of slipped through the cracks but Dick Garmaker seems like a legit pick. At this point in the draft, you’re either going for boom type prospect or someone to hopefully fill out the rotation and good ole’ Dick here seems like a guy who can play 10mpg as a rookie and be somewhat serviceable
27) Timberwolves- Johnny Newman provides solid depth for a team that has every starter filled and most of the rotation already set. Johnny is a solid athlete that can score and defend a little to give them some depth at the 2/3.
28) Buenos Aires- the pick is LARRY COSTELLO. Echoing a point made earlier, getting a potential backup and future rotational player this late is a good move and Costello can easily come in and backup the PG position. He has the chance to develop into a future starter due to his defensive and overall ball handling/passing ability.
29) Celtics- With they only depth behind starters Webber and Wallace being 2 weak, ninny-baby shooters, the Celtics elect to go with one of the roughest players in this draft in Red Kerr. Undersized for the center position and not very athletic, his strength and skill set should give him some credibility as a backup.
30) Nets- We are shooting for the moon here with Julius Keye. Keye has the ability to be a shutdown defender, great rebounder and best of all, shot blocking extraordinaire. Unfortunately, there is not much he does on the offensive end but at 30, you take the chances that his ability to impact the defensive side outweighs his weaknesses on the offensive end.
31) Buenos Aires- Seeing no big men worth a crap left in the draft, Buenos Aires takes Richard Jones to be a solid backup at the 2/3. He should come in right away and give solid wing play with a very good amount of rebounds.
32) Warriors- Let’s roll with Norm Van Lier—not only does he have a great name, but he’s going to pick your pocket if you’re not careful. There’s potential here to be a pretty great defensive PG, but that’s his ceiling at the moment. I think a lot of people would be happy to find that at 32.
