New Orleans had the Odd Numbers and Seattle had the Even Numbers. Just alternating making decisions and writing.
1. Brooklyn Nets - Magic Johnson (6’9 PG, Michigan State)
Magic is a unique player with the potential to play four different positions. May find his best home at the three spot but he’s the guy you can’t pass up if you have the first pick in this draft and the Nets new rebrand will love having the talent added.
2. San Antonio Spurs - Brandon Roy (6’6 SG, Washington)
Brandon Roy has the ability to play 3 positions and is a player that has the potential to be high end scorer right away. He fits right in the Spurs as a starting shooting guard and gives McGinnis some floor spacing as well.
3. Brooklyn Nets - Penny Hardaway (6’7 PG, Memphis)
Going into the pick I thought the Nets would get one of Penny or Webber but with both left the decision was a bit tougher. With the chance to add Penny and move Magic to the three where he’s best, Nets have a foundation for a while.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers - Chris Webber (6’10 PF, Michigan)
Webber has the potential to be 20/10 guy in the league with above average defense backed up by solid athletics. The Cavaliers are drafting in the perfect spot as they will take which of the top 4 prospects is available.
5. Boston Celtics - Sidney Moncrief (6’4 SG, Arkansas)
With Greg Oden in toe, the Celtics could add an elite perimeter defender who fits the inside focus perfectly. Moncrief will likely only play the two and be limited from outside but he’s close to ready and could fit with the timeline Oden provides.
6. Sarawak Fire Horse BC - LaMarcus Aldridge (6’11 PF, Texas)
Aldridge is gonna be a solid starting 4 in this league with his ability to hit the midrange really well and crash the boards. Sarawak needs a third big behind Bynum and Sheed or could potentially slide Sheed to the three.
7. Shanghai Sharks - Bill Laimbeer (6’11 C, Notre Dame)
Bill Laimbeer is a high floor, low ceiling center that is average at scoring and post defending with rebounding being his main strength. He can come in and start right away for Shanghai as a team in desperate need of a big.
8. Belgrade KK Partizan - Allan Houston (6’6 SG, Tennessee)
Belgrade is in the precarious position of needing a guard and not wanting to reach too far for one of the point guards. That means adding potentially the best scorer in the draft who lacks on the defensive end is the best fit at this tier.
9. Buenos Aires Boca Juniors - Paul Millsap (6’8 PF, Louisiana Tech)
Millsap has an extremely intriguing potential as a player who could play either forward spot with ease. With Buenos Aires in a complete rebuild and just in need of talent, he’d fit as a guy who could do it all down the line.
10. Istanubul Anadolu Efes - Jamal Mashburn (6’8 SF, Kentucky)
Mashburn is an athletic scoring combo forward who still holds value despite not being able to defend or rebound. Istanbul can plug him in opposite Lebron or bring him off the bench as an instant offense 6th man.
11. Los Angeles Lakers - Rudy Gay (6’8 SF, Connecticut)
At this point in the draft Gay is hard to pass up as a guy who will be able to do quite a bit on the court when he reaches his potential. It will allow the Lakers to move Shard to the four and run with a smaller line-up.
12. Brazil Franca BC - Vinnie Johnson (6’2 SG, Baylor)
Vinnie Johnson is an athletic guard that is 1 training camp jump away from being a really good player while he already is a solid slasher. Brazil is looking to add any talent he possibly can and Vinnie fits that mold.
13. Los Angeles Lakers - Sam Cassell (6’3 PG, Florida State)
With Gay on board, the Cassell pick allows the GM to move Jack to the two where he’s much more efficient. Cassell will provide some scoring, defense, ball handling, and some nice athleticism to a team looking to turn the corner.
14. Real Madrid - Rajon Rondo (6’1 PG, Kentucky)
Rondo is a pure point with no outside shooting but should make up for it with his defending and rebounding. Real needs a point guard after dealing Lester to Vancouver and everyone knows Madrid can’t pass up a point guard.
15. Portland Trailblazers - Kyle Lowry (6’0 PG, Villanova)
The Trailblazers have been playing point guard by committee for quite some time and even with Tinsley on the roster still, would love to add the multi-talented Lowry to the fray. He’s got solid athleticism to back up his skill set.
16. Minnesota Timberwolves - Vin Baker (6’11 PF, Hartford)
Vin Baker is a very solid big that can come in right away to score and rebound while his defense leaves something to be desired. Minnesota takes best player available as they have a starting 5 set and just need back-ups.
17. Moscow CSKA - J.J. Redick (6’4 SG, Duke)
Moscow should being back Tony Parker but will need another guard, preferably someone who can play with Parker. Redick can provide the needed floor spacing with Drummond and Kaman clogging the middle.
18. Tel Aviv Maccabi - Nick Van Exel (6’1 PG, Cincinnati)
Nick Van Exel is a pass first point that is average in the scoring and defending departments. Tel Aviv needs a point guard and drafts him hoping he can get Baylor and Amir the ball while racking up the assists.
19. New Orleans Jazz - Bill Cartwright (7’1 C, San Francisco)
Bill Cartwright is lane clogging center that can score inside pretty well but won’t block many shots. The Jazz need a big man that can occupy the paint While the jack it up from the outside.
20. Milano Olimpia - Calvin Natt (6’6 SF, Louisiana-Monroe)
Calvin Natt is an athletic forward that is gonna do the dirty work for his team. He can come in and get minutes for Milano right away at the two forward positions. Won’t take any shots away from Shaq which is crucial.
21. Seattle Supersonics - Isaiah Rider (6’5 SG, Seton Hall)
Sonics just traded away MJ and Melo to get this pick and Larry Johnson and needs someone to play the two guard spot. Rider won’t play much defense but that shouldn’t be an issue with those bigs. Will be an athlete who can score the ball.
22. Taipei Fubon Braves - Thabo Sefolosha (6’7 SG, Switzerland)
Thabo is perimeter defender that should knock some shots down from outside. Taipei needs some wing depth and he can backup both wing spots once they bring back Isaiah Thomas.
23. San Francisco Warriors - Gerald Henderson (6’2 PG, VCU)
The Warriors bring back most of their talent but could use a back-up point guard and Henderson provides just that. He won’t knock many shots down beyond the three point line but can score elsewhere, distribute, and defend with athleticism.
24. Chicago Bulls - Johnny Moore (6’1 PG, Texas)
Johnny Moore is a pure point that can run the offense as well as defend pretty well. He isn't going to be a scorer and he isn't going to wow anyone athletically but Chicago can slide him in behind Mudiay right away.
25. Buenos Aires Boca Juniors - Cliff Robinson (6’9 PF, Southern Cal)
With Millsap already added they follow up with yet another forward who could potentially play multiple positions. There isn’t a ton of talent on the roster so adding someone with this value late is a big get.
26. Seattle Supersonics - Allen Leavell (6’1 PG, Oklahoma City)
Supersonics can use another guard going forward and Leavell should give them some minutes at the point guard position if needed. He won’t score much but defends and is extremely quick. Won’t turn it over either.
27. Mikawa Aisin Seahorses - James Donaldson (7’2 C, Washington State)
The Aisin Seahorses could use a big man behind Russell who can block shots and Donaldson fits that bill. He’ll block shots, rebound, provide post defense and make his free throws. Not athletic but Mikawa has the athleticism around him to make up for it.
28. Tel Aviv Maccabi - Mark Eaton (7’4 C, UCLA)
Mark Eaton is the size of the lane and has the ability to clear the paint and grab rebounds while also protecting the rim. That makes him a desirable backup to Maccabi Tel Aviv who is looking to compete yet again.
29. Real Madrid - Shawn Bradley (7’6 C, BYU)
Madrid could use a big man and Bradley is another one of these rim protectors that while one dimensional provide a skill that every roster can use. He’ll split minutes with Longley and hopefully develop somewhere else.
30. Newcastle Eagles - Jim Paxson (6’6 SG, Dayton)
Jim Paxson is solid slasher and defender that can't shoot. He is a pretty average athlete but has enough hops to get by. Newcastle takes the best available player left and looks to return to the title game.
31. New York Knicks - Bryon Russell (6’7 SF, Long Beach State)
The Knicks love forwards and Russell is just that. The Knicks could use a guard I’m sure but at this point he would grab Russell and run. It’s one of those picks where everyone else will regret.
32. Belgrade KK Partizan - Kyle Macy (6’3 PG, Kentucky)
Kyle Macy can handle the Rock and hit some jump shots while playing giving his team a little bit of 2 way play with his defense. He can't jump, simple as that. Belgrade takes the best guard left on the board.
