Question #1: There have been a lot of big trades so far this season. What are the three biggest trades in your opinion and why?
Grizz Answer:
The biggest I’d say was Vancouver and Lakers, where Mikan, KP and 2 picks went to Vancouver and Barry, Mel Daniels and 1 pick wen to LA. This was a huge trade that sent the league into a tizzy and was just the opening top for major deals this offseason. The second biggest I’d say was between Bamberg & Perth where D-Wade was shipped to Perth for 5 1sts and Captain Kirk. This was a headscratcher for all outside parties as Perth managed to keep his best assets and obtained a legit star still on a rookie deal. The third is Barca’s trades as a whole. Tough to gauge which was the biggest but the 3 & 7 for the MVP has to be up there along with trading Paul and Sheed for his own 1st. They were all blockbusters to which he ended up on the wrong side of each one, so for that, all of barca’s trades are to be looked at as one.
Question #2: Given the previous question, what are from a team perspective the good, the bad and the ugly in terms of trading this season. I.E. who has done good, who are you unsure of and who has left you scratching your head. Do not list more than 2 teams in any one area.
Grizz Answer:
The good I’d have to say is Piraeus and Perth. Piraeus turned 3 & 7 in a mediocre draft into MVP Kevin McHale and then flipped his Brazil pick in another weak draft for Hondo and 3 later 1sts. He has his team setup to contend for a while. Perth is only on here cause of 1 deal and that was a straight steal of D wade for nothing. He’s barely above 500 but this deal alone gets him on the good list.
The bad/meh (aka unsure) group is Vancouver and Cairo. What do you know, the two teams who have traded like mad men are on the unsure list. Both have made great trades and then head-scratching ones but overall it seems like they are both in a better position than where they started. Both GMs seem to keep throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks but they have received more talent than what was given up, so it just remains to be seen how they make it work.
The ugly is Barcelona by a landslide and then KK Cibona. Barcelona had McHale, MJ and Damon to start, then they had a bunch of rookies and Rasheed, then they had CP3 and Sheed with a top 10 pick and now they have a top 10 pick and meh. Talk about getting 2 cents on the dollar. Seems they are going backwards while other teams are benefitting greatly from them. The other team is KK Cibona, who doesn’t have his pick this year and yet he still decided to trade J Kidd for practically nothing. Show some competitive spirit and at least try to make your pick not top 6 but no, let’s just trade our best player, a top 15 talent overall, for a 1st just because? It made no sense at the time and there was no rush to trade Kidd as he didn’t have his pick. Just stupid.
Question #3: You are a GM free agent and have been offered two different jobs. One if the best job in the league in your opinion and the other is the toughest. What are the two jobs and why?
Grizz Answer:
This is a tough one. The best job I’d say is probably in Minnesota. They have superstars, mixed in with young talent and other assets where a GM can go in and shape the roster to his own liking. I was going to say NY but they are going to have some cap problems and will need to make some moves in the near future, so I didn’t think going there where difficult decisions lie (who stays / goes) was the best job even though they are ridiculously talented.
In terms of worst job, I’d go with KK Cibona. No assets to speak of now that Kidd is gone and without your own pick this year, this is going to be a grueling rebuild that will take years and will require a lot of luck. Franca was a close second but with Barkley and McDyess, they’ll be able to get some assets to help kickstart the rebuild.
Question #4: You have a 15 million dollar cap, can’t have any player over 6 million, and can’t have anyone on a rookie contract… who is your starting five?
Grizz Answer:
Jeez, this is ridiculous.
Center – Andrew Bogut
PF – Ryan Gomes
SF – Nick Stauskas
SG – Kevin Loughery
PG – Jordan Clarkson
This was practically impossible but this was the best bang for the buck I could come up with. We have Bogut who will anchor the Center position followed up by Gomes who will be very versatile. We then have Stauskas and Loughery who will light it up from downtown and Clarkson to defend the best guard on the other team.
Question #5: On a similar note to the last question, if you could add one player to your team, outside of players on rookie contracts and players who are earning more than $10mil per season, who would it be and why?
Grizz Answer:
It would have to be Dario Saric. Guy is an absolute stud signed for 6.5mil and is averaging 16/10/5/2 on a team that has a bunch of stars. If only their GM can figure out how to use people, they would be unstoppable but this is hands down the obvious choice here.
Question #6: What is one enhancement/change you think the league should implement when it comes to coaching and how would you implement it? (e.g: allow for you to trade coaches, promote AC to HC, etc).
Grizz Answer:
I would obviously love the ability to trade for coaches and to promote AC to HC but I think the most feasible thing is to bring back the co-mingled hard cap between players and coaches. I believe coaches impact for a rebuilding squad is great, so being able to go over your coaches cap to dig into your overall hc is a great benefit. The coaches cap as currently constructed is manually kept by the committee so I think we can bring this back with some ease. I’d like to see it raised just a hair and be done with actual dollars as opposed to it being rounded up to the highest million (ie if you’re at 5,000,001, only 1 dollar is used against your HC as opposed to 1 million).
Question #7: Mid-Season Awards Ballot time! Who are the winners in the following award areas. Briefly list why.
Grizz Answer:
MVP – Kevin McHale – I thought AD would be a shoe in this year but McHale has risen to the top not only leading his team but dude is averaging 36ppg in 36mpg. He’s also 7ppg greater than everyone else and is also top 3 in rebounds and top 10 in blocks.
Rookie of the Year – Mitch Richmond – homer pick here but he’s got 2 ROTM and is only going to increase his workload from here.
Defensive Player of the Year – always tough, but I’ll go Bill Russell with 4bpg and 1spg while having a 92 dEFF rating.
First Team All League *must stick to listed positions
C- Anthony Davis – will be the runner up MVP
PF-Kevin McHale – will be the MVP
SF- Elgin Baylor – flourishing now that he’s the lead guy in Maccabi
SG- Dwayne Wade – putting up better stats then MJ and leading his team
PG- Joe Dumars – tough choice here but his numbers are ridiculous
First Team All Rookie *must stick to listed positions
C-Kresimir Cosic – another best of a bad group, he is putting up numbers in limited minutes
PF- Dirk Nowitzki – great scorer already in a weak class
SF – Vince Carter – with nothing else on his team, will put up good stats on a terrible team
SG- Mitch Richmond – my pick for ROTY,
PG- Rod Strickland – best of a really bad group
