In this article we will look at the top performers of each sim. Today we look at the statistical leaders for Sim Five. Some of the categories we will look at are:
- Top 5 Scorers
- Top 5 Passers (assist)
- Top 5 Rebounders
- Top 5 Shot Blockers
- Top 5 Ball Thieves (steals)
Sim Five Individual Statistics
Sim Five Top Scorers
Shaquille O'Neal (Olimpia) - 37.8 Points Per Game
- Surprise, surprise we've got a new #1 and it's Shaquille O'Neal who finally got his minutes bumped up and responded with of the best sims of the season by anyone (you'll see what I mean as we go through). Playing nearly 40 MPG this sim, Shaq didn't fall below 34 points in any game and not only that but he crossed the 40 point mark twice. To add to that his performance allowed his team to take the division lead with a winning 4-2 sim. His best performance would be a toss up between his two 40+ point games but rather than going with his 44 point game in a loss we are going to go with his 40 point game when he battled it out with Marc Gasol and came out on top.
Kevin McHale (Olympiacos) - 34.0 Points Per Game
- This is likely the biggest shock for most people reading this article but Kevin McHale comes in at #2 this sim, falling below #1 for the first time this season. This was another one of those "down" sims for McHale but really with 34.0 PPG it's not his fault that he dropped a spot this sim but rather the impressive play from the new #1 scorer. McHale crossed the 20 point per game mark every game this sim but that goes without saying seeing as he has only fallen below 20 Point once this season. What we will focus on is the fact that he hit 30 points 5 times with two of those crossing the 40 point mark. His best game could arguably be his 41 point game but because I try to value winning in close cases like this it's not the game I'll choose. Instead I'm going to go with his 40 point game in victory against Brazil as his top performance of the sim.
Marc Gasol (Southern Tigers) - 30.8 Points Per Game
- Marc Gasol becomes the first Southern Tiger I've covered in any of these articles thanks to a huge scoring sim. Outperforming his brother over these past two weeks, Gasol put up 30.8 PPG throughout this sim. He did so by not only passing the 20 Point mark in every game bu also finishing the sim off with four games of 32+ points. His best came at the end of the sim where he put up 37 points in a victory against the Globetrotters.
Anthony Davis (Flamengo) - 28.4 Points Per Game
- AD makes his way back into the top 5 with a 28.4 PPG sim after missing out last sim and lands in the #4 spot. He was able to cross the 20 point mark in every game this sim and is currently on a 11 game streak of 20 points or more. However this didn't result in many wins for his team as they were only able to go 2-5 this sim. His best performance was unquestionably his 46 point game against the Portland Trail Blazers where he attempted to will his team to victory.
Pau Gasol (Knicks) - 28.3 Points Per Game
- After coming in as the #2 scorer last sim, Pau Gasol cooled down this sim but still comes in as the #5 scorer this time around. The CSKA Moscow defense was able to keep him under 20 points in their game but in his other 6 games he was able to hit 20 or better. He had a stretch of three games this sim where he had at minimum 35 points with his best performance being a 42 point outing against the Newcastle Eagles.
Sim Five Top Passers
- John Stockton (Knicks) - 12.6 Assist Per Game
- For two straight sims, John Stockton was the #2 passer in the league but he decided to kick it up a notch this sim but finally jumping to the #1 spot. He did fall below the 10 Assist mark once but outside of that game him never fell below 11 for the sim. If you look back even further outside of that game he has had at least 11 assist for 10 of his last 11 games. With him passing like this it is no surprise his team is on a 15 game win streak. His best performance would possibly be his 15 assist game in some people's eyes but I was more impressed with his efficient passing in his 13 assist game with 0 turnovers against Newcastle.
TJ Ford (Buenos Aires) - 12.3 Assist Per Game
- This was definitely not a name I was expecting to see on any of these list let alone have come in at #2 in passing. But TJ Ford comes in at the 2nd spot after an amazing 12.3 APG sim where his team was without Lou Hudson but still managed to go 5-1. While he did fall below 10 assist in one game, his teammates quickly forgot about that after he came back the next game and put up 19 assist to give his team the victory against the Titans.
Isiah Thomas (Fubon Braves) - 10.9 Assist Per Game
- After a sim at the top, Isiah comes back down a bit with a still impressive 10.9 APG sim. His team didn't seem to mind the lack of passing as they went 5-2 on the sim but it is a bit telling that in the two games where he fell below 10 Assist his team lost. But to get back to the positive, his best performance for me would have to be his 15 assist game where he only had 3 turnovers.
Nate Robinson (Southern Tigers) - 10.2 Assist Per Game
- For two sims we had zero Southern Tigers' and now in Sim 5 we have two new faces to the list with Marc Gasol first & now PG Nate Robinson coming in as the 4th best passer this sim. Nate (probably unfairly) in my mind has always been a scoring guard so to see him hit 10+ APG over a 6 game stretch is impressive. In those 6 games, he hit the double digit mark in half of them with his best performance being a pretty impressive 17 assist game.
Joe Dumars (Madrid) - 10.0 Assist Per Game
- The final spot on this list goes to the only other player to hit at least 10 APG this sim, Joe Dumars. Dumar hasn't had much of a presence since the first ranking but he makes his way back with a strong passing sim. He wasn't able to hit the 10 Assist mark in his first three games of the sim which limited how high he could be on this ranking but finished strong with at least 11 assist in his last 4 games. He was at his best when he had a near triple double with 16 assist (before actually having a triple double in the next game) against Olimpia.
Sim Five Top Rebounders
Kevin McHale (Olympiacos) - 12.7 Rebounds Per Game
- While he lost his spot as the top scorer this sim, he found a new spot as the best rebounder for the sim. This was a bit of a surprise since McHale never been on any list besides the scoring one but I guess this shows there isn't anything about McHale that is one-dimensional. He fell below the 10 rebound mark once this sim in six games and had his best performance when he grabbed 19 rebounds against the Lakers.
Marc Gasol (Southern Tigers) - 12.0 Rebounds Per Game
- Another list, another Southern Tigers mention for the sim as they add to their best showing since I started doing these rankings. Gasol was one of the top scorers this sim but that wasn't the only thing he did to make sure his team had arguably their best sim of the season as he grabbed 12 RPG. He hit the 10 Rebound mark in all but one game this sim where he had 8 boards. His best game though was his 16 rebound game in a loss to Seattle.
Shaquille O'Neal (Olimpia) - 11.7 Rebounds Per Game
- Shaq comes in at #3 on the rebounding list this sim and you see what I mean now when I said earlier that he had one of the best sims of the season by anyone. Not only was he the best scorer in the league this sim but he was one of the league's top rebounders as well. I think it's safe to say that Shaq needs to be playing as many minutes as possible going forward. In all but one game he grabbed at least 10 rebounds and finished off the sim with his best performance by grabbing a big 17 boards in a win against the Grizzlies and another impressive rebounder.
Tom Heinsohn (Warriors) - 11.4 Rebounds Per Game
- Tommy Heinsohn comes in at #4 for the second straight sim with a slightly lower rebounding (but still) impressive rebounding average. Since re-signing Tommy has been doing everything he could to get the Warriors back into the post season and if he keeps boarding like this then they are a safe bet. He had two games where he wasn't able to grab at least 10 boards at the beginning and end of the sim but between those games he hit the 10 rebound mark every time with a combined 55 rebounds in 4 games. His best performance was definitely his 19 rebound game against KK Cibona.
Andrew Bynum (Grizzlies) - 11.4 Rebounds Per Game
- Mr. Consistent Andrew Bynum is the only player to be in the top 5 rebounding for every one of these rankings so far. While he slowed down a bit here, 11.4 Rebounds is still elite territory so we can't take anything away from the big guy. While he missed out on 10 rebounds in three of his 7 games, he probably had the most impressive rebounding game among the top 5 this sim with 20 boards against Buenos Aires in a victory.
Sim Five Top Shot Blockers
Dikembe Mutombo (Olympiacos) - 4.8 Blocks Per Game
- This one was spoiled for me a bit earlier when I was informed ahead of time that Deke had 4.8 BPG this sim so I kind of figured that he had to be the top shot blocker this sim. Deke makes his return to the top shot blocking list with an absolutely ridiculous amount of blocks after falling off last sim. In every game this sim, he walked away with at least two blocked shots but when trying to figure out which game it's not at all difficult because he swatted 9 of his opponents shots when he faced off with Bamberg.
Bill Russell (Mikawa) - 4.0 Blocks Per Game
- Coming in at #2 is last sim's top shot blocker, Bill Russell. While he didn't block as many shots as last sim (4.4), crossing the 4.0 BPG mark is still a huge accomplishment in a sim in my eyes. With him locking down the paint for his team, they were able to go 7-0 this sim and takeover the Eurasian Conference. While he did start the sim off with a goose egg block game, he then went on to have at least 2 blocks in every one of his remaining games. This includes a big 8 block night against his Eurasian rival Olympiacos but maybe even more impressive was his 7 block block night against American Conference contender Portland due to him also walking away from that game with 0 fouls.
Hakeem Olajuwon (Aoshen) - 3.5 Blocks Per Game
- I hear the Dream may be on the chopping block due to his team failing to win a single game this sim. However if he continues to block shots like this then I think we'll see Aoshen's GM start to reconsider his stance on a Hakeem trade. You could look at Hakeem's impressive offensive numbers this sim to show that he did everything he could to win his team some games but I was even more impressed with his defensive dominance. Not only did he pick up at least one steal in every game this sim, he blocked at least 2 shots in every game. While he was impressive in every game this sim, he was at his best when he swatted 5 of the Spurs shots in their one point loss to San Antonio.
Pau Gasol (Knicks) - 3.4 Blocks Per Game
- Gasol remains in his #4 spot for top shot blockers this sim with a consistent showing that helped keep his team as the #1 group in the league. This sim, Gasol only had a single game where he had less than 2 BPG and that was his first outing which was against the #3 player on this list. After he got warmed up he had a combined 23 blocks in his other 6 games. He had two games where he hit his sim high of 5 blocks but his best was probably his game against Moscow CSKA due to having one fewer foul.
Joel Embiid (Bulls) - 3.3 Blocks Per Game
- Embiid makes his second straight appearance in the top shot blocking ranks with a strong 3.3 BPG sim. While not as great as his 4.3 BPG sim last time around I'd still call this an impressive defensive sim for the big man. He had at least 2 blocks in every game this sim and for the most part stayed between 2-4 blocks a night but in his matchup against Harlem he decided to go above and beyond and swatted 6 in that game for his best outing.
Sim Five Top Ball Thieves (Steals)
John Stockton (Knicks) - 3.0 Steals Per Game
- Steals were down quite a bit this sim for whatever reason but your #1 ball thief remains the same for the the third time in a row as John Stockton tops all other perimeter defenders. While for the most part he kept his steal numbers above 2 per game, he did have a night where he didn't have a single steal for the entire game. But it was the tale of back to backs because in the game before that, he kicked the sim off with a 6 steal night against Beijing Aoshen in victory.
Jarrett Jack (Grizzlies) - 2.8 Steals Per Game
- Jack is making his debut in the rankings this sim as he benefited from the SPG being lower than usual and comes in as the #2 ball thief. He managed to pick up at least one steal in every game this sim besides the first. He heated up as the sim went along and the wins piled up though because in their 5th win of the sim, Jack gave his team 6 steals (but also fouled out) against the Chicago Bulls.
Terrell Brandon (Olimpia) - 2.8 Steals Per Game
- Another new face for this sim is Terrell Brandon who tied with Jarret Jack for the second best steal performance through the sim. He was a bit more consistent than JJ this sim with 3 steals in every game besides one where he had 2. However like I said, 3 was his best (3 steals in 5 different games) so he didn't have the high points that Jack did which also makes it hard to pick a best game, so we won't.
Guy Rodgers (Mikawa) - 2.7 Steals Per Game
- Guy Rodgers is back in the top ball thieves this sim and kicks off a 3 way tie to close out the list (yep there's 6 top ball thieves this sim). Down slightly from where he was last sim, he was still good enough to bring in 2.7 SPG. This was thanks to a consistent performance which saw him have a steal in every game and most of the time pick up at least 2. His best is a bit difficult to decide on since he had his sim high of 4 three times but in one of those 4 steal games he also had 0 fouls and that was against Belgrade so we'll go with that.
Doug Christie (Aoshen) - 2.7 Steals Per Game
- Doug Christie took a sim off but he's back in the top ball thieves for the sim with a 2.7 SPG performance. I already discussed the fact that his team went winless this sim but that wasn't his fault and his steal numbers of at least one per game shows that. In his game against NY to open the sim, he even picked up 5 steals with only 2 fouls in attempt to help his team pick up the victory.
Gerald Wallace (Mikawa) - 2.7 Steals Per Game
- The final member of this three way tie is the teammate of Guy Rodgers, "Crash" Gerald Wallace. Not content to let his teammate have all the fun, Wallace played above his average on the defensive end with 2.7 SPG which is 1 SPG better than his norm. He did have a game where he couldn't pick up a single steal but otherwise he made sure to have at least 2 in every game. His best performance was against Tel Aviv Maccabi though when he picked up an impressive 5 steals while matched up with one of the league's best scorers, Elgin Baylor.
