After 5 seasons of play, here are the franchises with the 10 worst all-time records
10. Piraeus Olympiacos (187-223) 0.456
GM changes since creation draft: 0
Piraeus started off strong with two 50+ win seasons, but a lengthy rebuild has hurt the organization and the credibility of their front office. They look to finally be competitive in 2005, with young stars like Kevin McHale, Damian Lillard and Dikembe Mutombo. If this season ends in anything other than a deep playoff run, the fans will be asking whether the rebuild was worth it.
9. Milan Olimpia (186-224) 0.454
GM changes since creation draft: 0
With a loopy GM at the helm, this organization has been nothing but a disaster. The franchise started off strong, drafting Walt Frazier is the first round of the creation draft, but quickly dumped him to Vancouver for little return. The lone bright spot for the team was a 57-win season in 2002, which ended in the first round. The future isn’t horrible, but with management unlikely to move Shaquille O’Neal anytime soon, the concern is that Shaq's entire career will be squandered in the Milan organization.
8. Barcelona Regal FC (181-229) 0.441
GM changes since creation draft: 0
The direction of this team is questionable – they recently acquired Michael Jordan in a move that looked like they were finally ready to put all their cards on the table and go for it, before the GM quickly panicked and traded him for young assets. The fans in Barcelona are begging management to give them something to cheer about. The future does look good, with Rasheed Wallace and young studs like George McGinnis, Vince Carter and Vladimir Pistelak. The 2005 season should be an interesting one in Barcelona, but fans will have to wait for the youth to develop before they can expect a deep playoff run.
7. Bamberg Brose Baskets (174-236) 0.424
GM changes since creation draft: 0
While he’s definitely not the worst GM in the league, there is no question that Bamberg is home to the most overrated GM in the league. Regularly providing his opinion on the mistakes of other GMs, in 5 seasons the team has done nothing. All eyes will be on Bamberg this season, however, as they’ve finally turned their losing ways into an exceptional roster. Many wonder though whether it really needed to take 5 seasons to get here.
6. Washington Generals (170-240) 0.415
GM changes since creation draft: 1
The founding Generals GM had a vision in place – sell off all creation draft picks for future assets. The result was two terrible first seasons, including a 6-win season in 2000. The team has been on the way up since then, however, and looks like a perennial playoff team in America, with young studs like John Havlicek, Latrell Sprewell and Jahlil Okafor. The question is whether Washington has enough to make it further than rounds 1 or 2. At this time, it’s not looking good.
5. San Francisco Warriors (167-243) 0.407
GM changes since creation draft: 1(?)
The current Warriors GM has a steady hand, and the result is a team loaded with young talent. The fans haven’t had much to celebrate so far, but as long as they have current management running things the future looks solid. The team is set up for a lengthy phase of competitiveness.
4. New Castle Eagles (167-243) 0.407
GM changes since creation draft: 0
The Eagles have just 1 winning season, and have never made the playoffs. What’s most disturbing though is that the future looks like more of the same. Of the 10 teams on this list, the Eagles might be the worst both historically and going forward. The quiet GM has escaped IT awards in the past, but he probably has a couple heading his way soon.
3. Los Angeles Lakers (155-255) 0.378
GM changes since creation draft: 0
While the Lakers have had their fair share of solid young players, they’ve just never been able to put it together. The offseason trade with Vancouver really hurt them going forward as well. My prediction is that LA and New Castle will battle it out as the last two teams to make the playoffs.
2. Seattle Supersonics (143-267) 0.349
GM changes since creation draft: 0
Year after year, the Supersonics have been nothing but a complete disaster. After 5 seasons, they’ve finally pulled together enough assets to hopefully win more than 40 games, as they go into the 2005 season as a top 10 team on paper. I stress “on paper” as unfortunately this GM has the attention span of a squirrel. We’ll see if he’s able guide the team in the right direction, or if he blows it again.
1. San Antonio Spurs (134-276) 0.327
GM changes since creation draft: 0
As a 4-time IT award winner, it’s no surprise SA tops the list. Their best season came in 2001 with a horrible 32-50 record. Like the Sonics, however, this season looks promising with the likes of Sam Jones, Patrick Ewing, Jerry Lucas, and Earl Monroe. If the GM can put together some reasonable DC and game plan strategies, and maybe add a little depth, fans will finally see a playoff game this season, and possibly even a playoff run.
