TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - With the playoffs over and a new champion crowned all attention has turned to the 2004 Ultimate ABCA Draft. The draft class is widely regarded as the best one in league history with some exciting prospects declaring for the draft. Here is a mock draft covering the first round, starting with Istanbul who won the draft lottery to claim the #1 overall pick.
11. Chicago Bulls: Tal Brody
Point Guard / 22 Years old / 6'2 / 175 lbs
The Bulls have a different look these days after trading away superstar Charles Barkley for a package of younger talent. With Carroll, Horford and Griffith being the building blocks I think they go for a point guard here, a position that is a difficult one to fill. Tal Brody is the pick here. Brody is probably the best natural point guard in the draft class, with his skills already quite well developed, he can fit right in with the core in Chicago. The point guard from Israel does a bit of everything that you would want from a point guard, from his passing, defense and his jumpshot, he is good value here at #11, and could easily end up going a pick or two higher than this on draft day.
12. Auckland Breakers: D'Angelo Russell
Shooting Guard / 19 Years old / 6'5 / 190 lbs
The Breakers just like the Bulls used to find themselves at the top of the standings but are now in the lottery to rebuild their franchise. Although they already have Zach LaVine on their roster who put up 18.5ppg last season I think they go with D'Angelo Russell with this pick. Russell is a bit of a risky pick but it could be a high reward if he fulfills his potential. At only 19 years old his game needs quite a lot of work right now but he has shown great upside and the Breakers are in a position where they could give him time to develop. He has the skill set to allow him to play at either guard spot and has the potential to become a very effective scorer in the league.
13. Chicago Bulls: Willie Cauley-Stein
Center / 21 Years old / 7'0 / 223 lbs
The Chicago Bulls find themselves on the clock again and find themselves with the opportunity to fill out their starting five with another young player. I'm not sure the talent at small forward is enough for them to pick one here though, so I think they just pick best player available. Willie Cauley-Stein is an interesting defensive prospect and one I think the Bulls will snap up. The Bulls can use him to backup both bigman positions while he develops his game. If he fulfills his potential he could become one of the best defenders from the draft class, if not the best. He is also a good athlete for a 7footer and defensively will be able to help right away.
14. Washington Generals: Kirk Hinrich
Point Guard / 23 Years old / 7'0 / 223 lbs
The Washington Generals are coming off their best season in franchise history and have a good group of young players on their roster and could go for any position really here, maybe they will take a good look at the bigmen available here, like Darko and Love but end up going with Kirk Hinrich. Hinrich is one of the oldest players in the draft class but also one of the most developed and he will be able to slot right into the rotation for the Generals team that made the playoffs last season, in a position that they need some help. His biggest strength is his defense, he is one of the best defenders in the draft class and has the ability to guard either back court position.
15. Piraeus Olympiacos BC: Bob Love
Power Forward / 22 Years old / 6'8 / 215 lbs
Another team with their 2nd lottery selection, Olympiacos and this time I think they go with the versatile Bob Love. At 6'8 Love can play either forward position, his biggest attribute projects to be his defense, both out on the perimeter and in the post. At 22 years of age though he skills aren’t quite as developed as they could be and he will have to work on fulfilling his potential. It's not just his defense though, on the offensive side he projects to become a good scorer, even out to 3point range. His rebounding needs some work also but I think his versatility sees him get drafted here.
16. Minnesota Timberwolves: Darko Milicic
Center / 20 Years old / 7'0 / 245 lbs
The Timberwolves find themselves on the clock again and are in a great position. After going best player available last time I think they look for help at the Center position here and choose between Milicic, Kaman and Okafor and pick the one that they feel best suits their team. I think Darko Milicic is the pick here. The Serbian bigman is a bit of an unknown but has the potential skill set to develop into a good bigman. He is only 20 years old right now and is coming in raw but has shown good upside already in Europe. He doesn't project to be elite in any area but does a bit of everything that you want from your center, from scoring, defending and rebounding. The problem for him would be how many minutes he would get right away with a contending Timberwolves team.
17. Perth Wildcats: Emmanuel Mudiay
Point Guard / 19 Years old / 6'5 / 204 lbs
Although Perth picked up Frank Johnson in the draft last season, I think they still pick Mudiay here. Mudiay is an interesting prospect and one that could find himself being chosen higher than this come draft night. Like some of the other younger players in the class he is a bit of a risky pick but one than can pay off if he develops his game. The 19 year old from Congo has great height for the point guard position, his passing and defense project to be his biggest strengths to his game as he develops. He already is a decent defender out on the perimeter, but he will need to work on his 3point shot during his career to help spread the floor for his team mates.
18. Mexico City Titans: Jahlil Okafor
Center / 19 Years old / 6'11 / 270 lbs
Another team with a 2nd lottery pick is Mexico City, this time they select Jahlil Okafor. Okafor is a similar player to what Mexico have now in Jeff Ruland but he is probably the best bigman still on the board. Okafor is a talented scorer in the post and will be able to put up some points straight away despite being only 19 years old. The rest of his game needs developing though, defense is an area where he could struggle in the ABCA, it's something that will need to be worked on. He is also a bit of a selfish player and doesn't look to pass the ball.
19. Buenos Aires Boca Juniors: Mario Hezonja
Small Forward / 19 Years old / 6'8 / 211 lbs
The 19 year old from Croatia gets selected by Buenos Aires. Hezonja is a good athlete and has great size. His scoring is already quite well developed for someone of his age, he can use his athleticism to get to the rim but he also has a good jumpshot, mainly from the mid-range right now but has the potential to become a threat from deep. Defensively he is very raw right now and will need to develop there but has shown signs of becoming a decent defender on the perimeter. Doesn't quite have the quickness or handling to be able to play the shooting guard position though which is a shame.
20. Moscow CSKA: Jerry Sloan
Shooting Guard / 22 Years old / 6'5 / 192 lbs
After trading away Alvin Robertson in the off-season for cap relief I think CSKA look to fill that void right away and pick up Jerry Sloan. Sloan is a similar player to Alvin and prides himself on his defense, and he is able to come in and contribute to the team straight away. Offensively Sloan isn't much of a scorer attacking the rim, he gets all his points from mid-range in particular, but also out beyond the 3point line. If he can continue to develop his skills he could develop into a very good "3&D" shooting guard and should fit in well in CSKA.
21. Mikawa Aisin Seahorses: Josh Howard
Small Forward / 21 Years old / 6'7 / 201 lbs
Mikawa would of probably preferred to pick up a point guard here but not sure there is one worth picking at this spot. Howard is an athletic forward who's best attribute is his defense, he will be able to be effective on that end of the floor from day one. He also projects to be a threat on the offensive side but he will need time to develop there.
22. Bamberg Brose Baskets: Tom Van Arsdale
Shooting Guard / 22 Years old / 6'5 / 200 lbs
His brother was selected earlier in the draft, it's now Tom's turn. His game is similar to his brother's, defensively is where he is at his best, he has the ability to become a very effective player on that side of the floor. Not quite the athlete that his brother is and also not quite the scorer either, although not a liability on that end.
23. New Orleans Jazz: Kyle Korver
Shooting Guard / 22 Years old / 6'7 / 210 lbs
Probably the best shooter in the draft class, Kyle Korver. The Jazz pick him up in what's a good fit for him, he will open up the floor to make things easier for both Tony Parker and Andre Drummond. Playing with those guys should help him get better looks on the 3point line and he will make teams pay if they leave him open. A great shooter, but that's all he is really.
24. Seattle Supersonics: Trey Lyles
Power Forward / 20 Years old / 6'10 / 230 lbs
A raw prospect that needs some help to fulfill his potential but he is an interesting prospect offensively for a power forward. At 6'10 he shows the ability to stretch the floor and hit the 3point shot. Not the best athlete but projects to be a decent rebounder and defender to go along with his scoring.
25. Chicago Bulls: Boris Diaw
Power Forward / 22 Years old / 6'8 / 248 lbs
Boris Diaw is one of the more versatile players in the draft class. The forward from France can play a number of different positions. He will need to be developed but has potential. A good passer for someone of his height and decent defensively. Not much of a scorer and isn't the best athlete.
26. Rio de Janeiro Flamengo: Mickael Pietrus
Shooting Guard / 22 Years old / 6'6 / 210 lbs
One of the better defenders at the guard spots in the draft class, Mickael Pietrus. The guard from Guadeloupe is a good athlete and a pesky defender out on the perimeter. Offensively he is very raw but has the potential to develop there. At 6'6 he has good height for the shooting guard position.
27. Washington Generals: Chris Kaman
Center / 21 Years old / 7'0 / 260 lbs
After going small earlier in the draft the Generals pick up their bigman help here. Kaman has the ability to be taken higher in the draft. Defensively he struggles but he is a very good rebounder and a threat in the post offensively and should develop into a decent scoring/rebounding bigman in the ABCA.
28. Zagreb KK Cibona: Frank Kaminsky
Center / 22 Years old / 7'0 / 242 lbs
Another 7footer is next up, Frank Kaminsky goes to Zagreb who are in need of some help in the frontcourt. Similar to Kaman he is a good scorer and rebounder but struggles a bit on the defensive end. If he develops into his potential just like Kaman he could become a very good rotation bigman in the league.
29. Auckland Breakers: David West
Power Forward / 21 Years old / 6'9 / 245 lbs
David West puts the power in power forward. The strong bigman has an impressive mid range game and is also a good rebounder on both sides of the glass. Will struggle against the more athletic power forwards in the league due to his lack of athleticism, also an average defender in the post.
30. Cairo Zamalek: Myles Turner
Power Forward / 20 Years old / 6'11 / 240 lbs
Zamalek add some youth to their front court. Myles Turner will need to be develop as the 20 year old is very raw coming into the league, but has the potential to develop into a good player. A good shot blocker on the defensive end and possesses a nice jumpshot on the offensive side.
31. Belgrade KK Partizan: Mo Williams
Shooting Guard / 21 Years old / 6'1 / 208 lbs
Mo Williams is a score first guard and can provide instant offense from either guard position. He is particularly dangerous from beyond the 3point line, he is one of the better shooters in the draft class. Needs to work on his defense but his scoring alongside his passing is what gets him drafted.
32. New York Knicks: Justice Winslow
Small Forward / 19 Years old / 6'7 / 219 lbs
Winslow is raw but he has a good upside. The 19 year old is a very good athlete who's biggest strength is his defense, he shows the potential to be able to guard both in the post and out on the perimeter. On the offensive side he needs to work on his jumpshot but can score inside and he fits in well on the Knicks roster.
33. Vancouver Grizzlies: Zaza Pachulia
Center / 20 Years old / 6'7 / 219 lbs
The bigman from Georgia adds depth to Vancouver's frontcourt. Pachulia is a strong player who plays hard, never gives his opponent an easy game. Doesn't add too much on the offensive end but is a good rebounder on both the offensive and defensive glass and a decent defender in the post with potential to improve.
34. Rio de Janeiro Flamengo: John McGlocklin
Shooting Guard / 21 Years old / 6'5 / 207 lbs
McGlockin comes into the league needing developing but has good scoring upside with his shooting ability, one of the better shooters in the draft class this year. Not a great athlete and struggles guarding out on the perimeter too but he gets drafted here because of his scoring potential.
35. Tel Aviv Maccabi: Flynn Robinson
Point Guard / 24 Years old / 6'1 / 182 lbs
One of the oldest players in the draft class, Robinson is a pass first point guard. He Has good quickness and ball handling ability and can score inside, attacking the basket. Not much of a defender though, needs to work on his jumpshot and at 24 years old still needs to develop.
36. Taipei Fubon Braves: Ndudi Ebi
Small Forward / 20 Years old / 6'9 / 194 lbs
Ebi is probably entering the draft a year or two early as his needs quite a bit of development still, but he does have a good upside and is worth the risk this late in the draft. Taipei will have to work to develop him but if he can reach his potential he could become an effective player on both sides of the floor.
1. Istanbul Anadolu Efes: LeBron James Small Forward / 19 Years old / 6'8 / 240 lbs Ever since declaring for the 2004 draft LeBron James has been penciled in for the #1 pick. An elite level athlete who has scouts raving about him and teams excited about the prospect of adding him to their franchise. The 19 year old is ready to come in and contribute right away, Istanbul will not have to wait on him to develop. A unique prospect LeBron can do it all on the floor without any real weaknesses in his game, he has the ability to play in multiple positions. He will be a force attacking the rim, he is a gifted passer of the basketball. Istanbul have never made the playoffs but things are looking up for them now after jumping up in the lottery, a player they can truly build their team around.
2. Barcelona Regal FC: Dwayne Wade Shooting Guard / 21 Years old / 6'4 / 207 lbs The #2 position in this draft is probably one that many people feel differently about, with the majority favoring Rick Barry to be picked here, but I feel the 2nd best prospect in the draft class is Dwayne Wade. The 21 year old shooting guard is possibly the most ready now player in the class and has the ability and potential to be one of the best players in the league at his position throughout his career in the ABCA. Much like LeBron he is a gifted athlete, who thrives going to the basket. He has the ability to play either of the guard positions with his passing ability, defensively he has great potential too. He needs to work on his 3point shot but that’s something that can be worked on. Barcelona have their front court sorted with Kevin McHale, and also George Mikan to resign, now to think about the back court.
3. Mexico City Titans: Rick Barry Small Forward / 21 Years old / 6'7 / 201 lbs Rick Barry is a gifted scorer, and Mexico will be delighted if he is still available at #3, many GM's believe he is the 2nd best prospect in the draft class, he could well end up being the best when everything is said and done. Barry is someone who has the ability to come into the league and sit among the league leaders in points every year if he develops to his potential. He can score from anywhere on the floor and is also a very good defender. Not quite the athlete that LeBron and Wade are but a very savvy player. Mexico have had a few disappointing seasons after a 63 win first season, and do have a need for a bigman which would see them consider Towns but putting Barry and Toney together would give them a potent offensive.
4. Seattle Supersonics: Carmelo Anthony Small Forward / 20 Years old / 6'8 / 235 lbs Another Small Forward is next up, Carmelo Anthony. After finishing with the worst record in the league and locking themselves into the #4 spot, The Sonics need help from any position so won't base their decision on positional need. Similar to Rick Barry, Carmelo Anthony is someone that knows how to put the ball in the basket, from any position on the floor, and that is something that the Supersonics need on their roster. Carmelo is a player they can build around. The rest of his game is a little raw at the moment but the Sonics have the time to be a little patient with him. Defensively is somewhere that Carmelo could struggle but the Sonics will be delighted to have a prospect of this caliber available at the #4 spot.
5. Bamberg Brose Baskets: Karl-Anthony Towns Center / 19 Years old / 7'0 / 241 lbs The best bigman in the draft, Karl-Anthony Towns, and it shows the quality of the draft that he is still available. Bamberg have a few holes in their roster as they are starting a rebuild and picking up a Center like Towns is a great place to start a rebuild. The 7 footer has a great skill set on both sides of the floor, and has even shown the potential to hit the 3point shot now and again, which would be a great weapon to have. At 19 years old he is coming in a little raw, particularly offensively and will need time to grow but with Bamberg just starting a rebuild they can give him that. Defensively though, he should come in and make an impact from his rookie season.
6. Mikawa Aisin Seahorses: Kristaps Porzingis Power Forward / 19 Years old / 7'3 / 240 lbs After finishing the season with the 4th worst record and having the best odds at the #1 pick, with many expecting the team to make the playoffs, it will hurt Mikawa to slip to the 6th pick. But still available is Kristaps Porzingis who is a unique prospect and could be a great fit with the Aisin Seahorses, a team that has played in unconventional ways in the past and a team who could get the best out of someone like Porzingis. The 19 year old from Latvia is raw right now and is a bit of a risky pick but he shows huge upside to become great player in the league. At 7'3 he has the ability to hit the 3point shot and has the potential to be a mismatch nightmare for the opposition. Another player they consider strongly here is Gail Goodrich and they could easily pick him here particularly with their need at point guard.
7. San Francisco Warriors: Gail Goodrich Point Guard / 22 Years old / 6'1 / 170 lbs The Warriors will be disappointed that their pick didn't land a little higher in the draft lottery but picking up Gail Goodrich at #7 is a great consolation prize. The 22 year old is a dynamic score first point guard, that can score all the way out to 3point range, he is one of the best shooters in the draft class. Although he prefers to score ball, he is also a decent passer too, although he does need to improve slightly in that area. At 22 years old he isn't a risky pick like some of the others prospects either, he game is already developed well on both sides of the floor and will be ready to contribute right away to try and get the team back into the playoff picture.
8. Newcastle Eagles: Chris Bosh Power Forward / 20 Years old / 6'11 / 229 lbs Although the team from England already has Antonio McDyess on their roster I think they take Chris Bosh here. Bosh is a bigman that does a little bit of everything that you want from one, he defends, rebounds, blocks the odd shot and can score. Scoring and rebound project to be his two biggest strengths in the league if he continues to develop into his potential. Offensively he isn't just a threat from the post, he can step back and hit the jumpshot consistently. Much like the Warriors, Newcastle will be disappointed their pick didn't land higher but Chris Bosh alongside Antonio McDyess could prove to be a good partnership in the front court for the team.
9. Minnesota Timberwolves: Billy Cunningham Small Forward / 22 Years old / 6'6 / 208 lbs After finishing the season with the best record and winning the Championship, Minnesota also find themselves with the #9 pick in the draft. The Timberwolves biggest need would be at center but they don't consider that at this pick, Cunningham would give them a nice scoring punch off the bench, with the ability to play a couple different positions, a perfect fit really for Minnesota. Cunningham's biggest strengths would be his scoring inside and his rebounding. The Timberwolves could look to move this pick but if they do end up keeping it, a player like Cunningham definitely improves their team. A good draft for the small forward position, Cunningham makes it 4 in the top 9.
10. Piraeus Olympiacos BC: Dick Van Arsdale Shooting Guard / 22 Years old / 6'5 / 208 lbs At the #10 spot is where the draft slips a bit in quality. Dick Van Arsdale is probably the best defender at the guard positions in the draft class and he is ready to contribute on that end of the floor right away, and would be a good fit on an Olympiacos team that selected Dikembe Mutumbo in the lottery last season. On the offensive side he won't contribute too much right away as he needs a little bit more development there, but he projects to become a good scorer from all spots on the floor, if he continues to fulfill his potential. There are a number of different ways this pick could go as the draft really opens up after pick #9, guys like Brody and Russell will get a good look at here too. |
17. Perth Wildcats: Emmanuel Mudiay

He is also a bit of a selfish player and doesn't look to pass the ball.
19. Buenos Aires Boca Juniors: Mario Hezonja

20. Moscow CSKA: Jerry Sloan

His game is similar to his brother's, defensively is where he is at his best, he has the ability to become a very effective player on that side of the floor. Not quite the athlete that his brother is and also not quite the scorer either, although not a liability on that end.
23. New Orleans Jazz: Kyle Korver

Playing with those guys should help him get better looks on the 3point line and he will make teams pay if they leave him open. A great shooter, but that's all he is really.
24. Seattle Supersonics: Trey Lyles
