Note: For you people who don't want to read this... there is a picture below with the draft as listed here. Names are bolded in article as selected.
Finally, the night arrived. The one we’ve all been waiting for. The infusion of talent at a height the league hasn’t seen since inception and it could be argued the cost of these talents will outweigh the impact even that day had on this still young league. Even the stars are buying tickets to see the future stars well dressed and ready to usher the league into a new era. The moment that changes everything is upon us and this is how it’ll happen.
John Scott walks up to the podium and the draft is under way. This is the commissioner one, not his evil alter personality who just hoisted a trophy after waltzing through the playoffs without a single scratch to remember it by. We get to see him just a bit later with his picks. Istanbul is on the clock and their GM, boog23, has the easiest choice in the draft. He screwed up resigning those guards but he won’t screw this one up when he takes Lebron James. Not quite Leborn Jamse but still has the ability to play the one through five.
This crowd isn’t very amused though because the real action is just about to begin when Barcelona, who is very accustomed to drafting at the top of the draft after taking Michael Jordan first in the creation draft and Kevin McHale two years ago at 2nd overall, picks. Scott walks back to the podium and the pick is in, it’s Rick Barry and Jeb has the scorer to pair with McHale and free agent Mikan if he can resign him.
Now the crowd is beginning to get riled up as anything could happen with the 3rd pick. Roark and his 73 children are back stage and ready to send the pick in. His love for big men and need for a game changer in the post may make this decision easy, even if there is more talent on the wings available. The announcement is made and Mexico City Big Men Killers select Karl-Anthony Towns. He may not make an immediate impact but he could really help this young team down the line.
Seattle is up and they are void of talent for the most part. Their GM is beginning to panic at the thought of another missed playoffs and that means he’ll want an instant impact player. Luckily he won’t have to trade out like most years. Always a proponent of athleticism, Seattle selects Dwayne Wade and hopes he can shoulder the scoring load or even play the point guard position.
Bamberg recently stated he would be MIA at the draft but he is here, like normal, lurking and awaiting the chance to finally shine in his weak division. With very little real talent on the roster, anything is a possibility here but he opts for Carmelo Anthony who despite his lack of defense and athleticism should still be an elite scorer in the league.
Mikawa and their GM have long been known for athletic scoring fours and a dominant point guard but this league hasn’t provided them with either right now. That means he has a real choice here with three different players on the board at those positions. Mikawa select Chris Bosh with hopes for a quick turn around and the leaves the Warriors up next. He’s solid across the board but picks the obvious choice in Kristaps Porzingis to play as an athletic stretch five next to Heinsohn.
The crowd is in a frenzy of boos with their hatred for Kristaps. Newcastle is up and the best players available all seem to in the backcourt where they are set with Exum and Snow. They can use a forward and the multi-talented Billy Cunningham is the choice here. Minnesota has a very solid backcourt and could use a center but there just aren’t any left so the evil alter of the commissioner tells his friendly side to select the PG of the future in Gail Goodrich. Those boos quickly turn to cheers for the real John Scott. *please stand up*
Piraeus and their GM haven’t had the success thus far he’s accustomed to but luckily he’s got the center position locked down unlike most selecting before him. That allows him to select the point guard of the future Kirk Hinrich to give him a good trio to work with. The Bulls also need a point guard and with only one left of the same caliber, the GM can’t afford to try and wait until 13 to grab him so they take Tal Brody. Nobody appreciates a good position run like the draft crowd and they show their love!
Auckland comes up after numerous failed runs at a title and needing a clean rebuild. Without the 2005 1st in tow, he’ll need to select a player with some potential but that can help now. With openings at both forward positions, the versatile Boris Diaw fits perfectly. That means Chicago is up with its 2nd pick of the draft and they take Dick Van Arsdale who will likely play the 3 to start. This is the type of draft where players could jump or fall 10-15 spots with the amount of talent here.
Washington’s starting point is a free agent but they have sights on bringing him back. That means any position is game to be selected and passing on the talented combo-guard in D’Angelo Russell just won’t happen here. Piraeus’ 2nd selection of the night is an interesting one as well. With Hinrich in the backcourt now and Deke in the middle, they select Willie Cauley-Stein to pair with with Deke down low to form an elite young defensive frontcourt.
Minnesota is up again afterwards and needs a big after going guard at the first pick. They would have loved to add Cauley-Stein but have to take Jahlil Okafor and his scoring over the beloved Darko Milicic. Perth comes up afterwards and the Wildcats have been on the prowl for backcourt help all season. They use this opportunity to select Jerry Sloan and give them a combo guard who can play both sides of the ball.
Mexico City returns to the clock with Towns on the roster but still wanting another big as usual. They select Darko Milicic to possibly play next to Towns or off the bench behind him and Ruland. Buenos Aires is a team who has been quieter than normal years and that means he may stick closely to what he knows. In the biggest homer pick of the draft, they select Mario Hezonja with the hopes of making him a super sub behind his potent wing duo.
Moscow is on the clock and let’s take a moment of silence for that choke job they pulled after being up 3-1 against Tel Aviv. The lack of scoring really hurt down the stretch and the plan is to fix that quickly by adding Kyle Korver as an elite shooter to round out the lotto. Mikawa sprints to the commish to turn in his pick and takes Emmanuel Mudiay to hopefully give him a solution at the point guard position after seemingly trying a new one every season.
After taking Melo, Bamberg could go in a number of directions here. They could use a pivot big or another wing and they fill the 2nd need by selecting Josh Howard to pair with Melo as two big wings. That means the Jazz and their newly appointed GM get to make their first real move since becoming the GM. With an elite point guard and plenty of forwards to play next to Drummond at Center, they decide to take Devin Booker as a big shooting guard to add some shooting to the roster. The new GM is showing off his chops early after shopping the pick.
Seattle is back on the clock after taking Wade to pair with Saric and after Saric’s play at center to end the season; it allows him to draft Bob Love to have at either forward spot depending on how the roster fills out. Chicago now comes up for the 3rd time and they’ve really boosted the backcourt thus far with Brody and DVA. They pass up a chance to take both Van Arsdale’s and take the stretch big Myles Turner to back up both big positions.
Rio comes up with plenty of talent but in need of some front court depth. They would have loved either of the last two taken but settle for one of the best mid-range jump shooters in the game, David West. That means Washington has their 2nd pick of the draft and with plenty of depth decide to take the best player available in Tom Van Arsdale to really strengthen the backcourt in case they lose their PG in FA and have to play Russell there.
At 28th, KK Cibona is up and is in dire need of help in the front court. They select one of the only real big centers left in Chris Kaman to give them someone to play against the number of bigs in the league. Auckland’s 2nd choice is a bit easier since so many forwards are off the board and they took one already with Diaw. Adding the athleticism of Leandro Barbosa to play next to Lavine and Diaw should be very enticing.
Cairo is up and there have been talks of a tear down or rebuild but if he does stay the course, he could use another forward to play both the 3 and the 4. Those are slim pickings but taking a guy like Justice Winslow despite his inability to rebound should work out with his roster. He can defend both positions and infuses some more athleticism. Belgrade needs backcourt help but still wants defense so he selects Mickael Pietrus and will have to find his point guard elsewhere.
The Knicks are 32nd overall and are another team in need of a point guard. They may be a bit more willing to roll the dice and select Mo Williams since they have plenty of rim protection behind him. Vancouver has his point guard so he’ll be looking to fill front court options and Kendrick Perkins’ ability to defend the rim gives him the perfect complement to his talented scoring trio.
Rio is set to make their 2nd pick of the 1st round and after taking David West, they can really choose to add a player at any position. Adding another big who can stretch the floor in Frank Kaminsky really makes sense for them since they’ve already experimented with AD at the 3. Tel Aviv comes up with an aging point guard and the need to fill that spot assuming they bring back Big Ben. Flynn Robinson makes the most sense for them.
That means Taipei has the last pick of the draft and take Trey Lyles to help shore up the frontcourt that got abused in their match-up with Belgrade. That ends the first round of the draft with numerous talented players remaining such as Ndudi Ebi, John McGlocklin, and Luke Ridnour. And now to call the 2nd round, the alter ego of the New York Knicks GM and the crowd go absolutely nuts!!
Double PP Please
