Larry Johnson(#2)Height: 6-6 Weight: 250 lbs. Position: Power Forward and Small Forward Born: March 14, 1969 in Tyler, Texas Age Drafted: 22 College: University of Nevada, Las Vegas Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
INS, JPS, ORB, STR, JMP
Larry Johnson was an explosive player upon entering the league, averaging 19 points 11 rebounds his first year. LJ was known as a tremendous dunker who used his strength and leaping ability to finish around the hoop. In the first few years of his career, Johnson was a low post scorer who mostly relied on his athletic ability. His first two years he averaged 11 and 10.5 rebounds per game along with 19 and 22 points. He looked like he was on the way to a HOF career. Chronic back injuries limited LJ's development, but he changed his game to adapt to the situation. Whereas he was a strong athletic PF before the injury, he changed himself into a jump shooting SF. Johnson averaged 33% 3PT on his career, but had 3 seasons over 36%. As a rebounder, he was an average DRB even in his prime (6.7 defensive rebounds per game years 1-3), but where he really excelled was on the offensive glass. He averaged more than 3 offensive rebounds per game through his first five years.
Weaknesses
PAS, STL, BLK, DRB
LJ's weaknesses differed from the beginning of his career to the end. The back injuries changed him from one of the most athletic players in the league to a limited jump shooter. He was never much of a defensive player, but rarely got any blocks or steals averaging less than 1 a game in both categories. While he came into the league as a very good rebounder, the injuries once again took their toll. He started averaging 10+ rebounds a game but by year 6 he was down around the 5 per game mark. As mentioned above, he was never an above average defensive rebounder. Not much of a passer, he averaged less than 3.5apg.
Notes
2X NBA All-Star, NBA ROY, NBA All-Rookie 1st Team, 1x All-League 1st Team
Chronic back injuries limited the promising start to his career.
