LaPhonso Ellis(#20)Height: 6-8 Weight: 240 lbs. Position: Power Forward and Small Forward Born: May 5, 1970 in East St. Louis, Illinois Age Drafted: 22 College: University of Notre Dame Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
LaPhonso during his brief career showed to be a capable scorer down low. His best year saw him average 21.9ppg and 7rpg. Ellis ended his career averaging 12ppg, and 6.5rpg. Ellis had a great start to his career in Denver and was a good shot blocker before the injuries. He averaged 1.4 and 1 BPG before the injury in year 3 of his career. A good FG% shooter with most coming down low finishing with a % of .452. Not bad from deep, shooting .302 from deep upon adding it to his arsenal after his injuries began to take away his athletic ability. He ended his career 73% from the FT line, so he could be relied on in that regard.
Weaknesses
Injuries are too often what define a man, and it's a big time definition of Ellis's career. Ellis really didn't shoot the ball as often as he should have only averaging 10 shots taken a game during his career. Ellis struggled with fouls due to his decreased speed. Not one that could be relied on to distribute the ball out of the post only averaging over 2 APG 3 times in his career, ending his career at 1.6. Ellis was never much for causing turnovers either, only averaged 0.7 SPG.
Notes
All Rookie 1st Team, 10th in PPG in 1997. Ellis was a scorer that had injuries really derail a potentially great player.
