Andrew Toney(#22)Height: 6-3 Weight: 178 lbs. Position: Shooting Guard Born: November 23, 1957 in Birmingham, Alabama Age Drafted: 23 College: University of Louisiana at Lafayette Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
Toney was one of the best scorers of the 1980s, and was once nicknamed the "Boston Strangler" for is post season exploits against the Celtics. His career scoring average was 15.9ppg, however he averaged over 19ppg twice in his short career. As shooter, Toney was one of the best 3PT shooters of his time, and just a pure shooter overall. His career averages of 50/34/80 show his ability to not only shoot often, but at relatively high percentages. The last thing for Toney was his superb athleticism, he was strong and fast with an absolutely deadly first step.
Weaknesses
The biggest weakness for Toney was his longevity. He never played more than 33mpg and his chronic foot problems limited what many thought could have been a great career. Toney also had some struggles with turnovers, twice ranking in top 10 in turnovers per game (3.0 career average).
Notes
2x All-Star, 1x NBA Champion
Toney has been praised by many players of his era, including Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Danny Ainge, for his ability to take over games. His career was hampered and ultimately cut short by foot injuries.
