For this mock draft I will take a look at the roster and make the pick as if I were said team. It’s simple, it’s pretty, and it may not always be best player available. This isn’t a Moscow looking at his scout and copying it thing at all. Enjoy, or don’t. I don’t rightly care but it’ll be interesting to say the least.
1. Boston – Elgin Baylor: This pick is simple because he should be the clear cut number one and doesn’t interfere with his only real long term talent in Dante Exum at all.
2. Tel Aviv – John Havlicek: As a team who has a couple nice long term pieces in Big Ben and PLM plus a defensive 3 in Bowen, adding a leading scorer who plays D as well makes sense!
3. Los Angeles – Bill Russell: Lakers had a rough creation draft when they misevaluated talent so adding as sure of a thing as there is in the ultimate defensive anchor is a great start.
4. Washington – Chris Paul: The Generals have no talent and Chris Paul is their best chance at getting a superstar so they take him here and love every minute of it.
5. Minnesota – Sam Jones: It is no secret that Minnesota wants to fill it’s starting five out and would likely prefer a big or point guard but Sam Jones gives him an incredible wing duo.
6. Madrid – Jerry Lucas: With the backcourt set for the foreseeable future, adding a rebounding and scoring power forward makes them well rounded as there are plenty of bigs around.
7. Washington – Andrew Bynum: After adding Chris Paul, he gets a big man to hold down the middle and score with ease thanks to someone who will come in as a top 5 PG.
8. Milano – K.C. Jones: Not the hugest Jones fan in the world but Milano already has scorers in Riva and Sheed so a PG to get them the ball could thrive in that situation.
9. Toronto – Deron Williams: Quite frankly I’d be looking to trade out of this pick since no players fit the biggest need but Williams can be played at the two with his size and athleticism.
10. Belgrade – Dave DeBusschere: Another position I’d clearly be looking to move out of because of fit but running Dave at the four works if he’s got the balls left to try it out.
11. Brazil – Andrew Bogut: Team may have a couple bigs already but Bogut gives you a potential stud over them. Team needs a good kicking in the rear or a GM to make it.
12. Portland – Terry Dischinger: At this point, the value can’t be passed up and you’ll have to rock it out with a few slower wings. Shouldn’t be an issue for a few years but you’d have a nice 5.
13. Seattle – Danny Granger: There is athleticism everywhere so having someone who isn’t as athletic at the 3 won’t hurt at all. He can immediately become the 2nd scoring option.
14. Istanbul – Tom Heinsohn: Sure, the Gerald Green playing the 3 option looks obvious but I’d give Tom a chance at the 3 or just use him as a super sub and figure the 3 position out elsewhere.
15. Taipei – Bill McGill: He’s athletic and can score inside. This team needs a sure thing with a roster full of athletic potential and they lack a big anyway.
16. New Orleans – Gerald Green: Not sure Corey would take the risk on the athletic potential but he’s got talent and adding a unique young piece could be fun for him.
17. Barcelona – Monta Ellis: The need to find another difference maker is real and he has the best chance to be one as the 6th man backing up guard positions.
18. Moscow – Raymond Felton: There is no point guard on the roster and finding a quick one to run the show is crucial the way Moscow has run his offense in the past.
19. Minnesota – Paul Hogue: After adding Jones to fill the 2 spot he gets an undersized 5 who can really protect the rim to play next to his athletes. Great fit and fill of a need.
20. Taipei – Nate Robinson: After getting the man in the middle, he keeps the athleticism flowing with a small but superb Nate Robinson who should outplay his color.
21. New Orleans – Leroy Ellis
22. Perth – Chet Walker
23. Belgrade – Guy Rodgers
24. Guangdong – Zelmo Beaty
25. Mikawa – Martell Webster
26. Minnesota – Bob Duffy
27. Taipei – Marvin Williams
28. Zagreb – Hot Rod Hundley
29. San Antonio – Charlie Villanueva
30. Istanbul – Rashad McCants
31. Istanbul – Amir Johnson
32. Toronto – David Lee
33. Chicago – Lou Williams
34. Tel Aviv – Rony Turiaf
35. Boston – Si Green
36. Toronto – Jim Paxson Sr.
