Name: Jerry West
Position: Point Guard, Shooting Guard
Number: 44
DOB: May 28, 1938
Age when drafted: 22
College: West Virginia University
Hometown: Chelyan, West Virginia
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 175
STRENGTHS:
Although the 3-point shot was not around during West's time, it is likely that he would've been one of the best 3-point shooters in the league had it been. West's frequent usage of perimeter shots, often from beyond the current NBA's 3-point line, led to his nickname of "Mr. Outside." Still, however, his mid-range jump shot is his biggest weapon. The Logo is an absolutely dynamite scorer, averaging 27 ppg for his NBA career. He also shot 47% from the field for his career, which for a guard is remarkable. Aside from his jump shot, West made his money on defense, where he was incessantly pesky. West made the All-Defensive team all five seasons he was eligible, and it is possible had it been around earlier in his career, West could've earned the award a dozen times. He was a lockdown defender and adept at taking the ball away from his opponent. He still ranks second in NBA history for steals in a game (10). He's incredibly quick and an excellent leaper, apparently with the ability to reach 16 inches above the rim. Finally, West ended his career as an outstanding passer, averaging around 9 per game for his last three seasons.
WEAKNESSES:
West is not very strong and will likely struggle to finish around the rim. As a kid, he needed vitamin injections and a doctor recommend he stay away from athletics. His Point Guard abilities are also questionable at this point. He came into the NBA only averaging 4-5 assists per game, although this increased gradually to the aforementioned seasons of 9+ per game. West is a scorer at heart and might be best used off the ball. West had dramatic changes in his game throughout the years. He started off as an average free throw shooter, in the 67-78% range his first few years, peaking at 88%. His rebounding started off great, at 7-8 per game, but tapered off and finished in the 4s. Still, overall, West is probably the best two-way player in the draft.
