Overall this was a pretty tame free agency period. While I have a listed of the best and worst signings, I don’t think there were any terrible signings and definitely no amazing steals. Next season’s FA will probably be a more exciting one with lots of available players and lots of teams with cap space.
Worst Signings:
7. Rasheed Wallace (Aalborg) 2 years @ 10.4M AAV + 3rd year TO
Rasheed has the athletics of a 14 year old, so not sure how he’s going to fair the next two seasons. At 32 we’ll have to see if he even gets playing time in the 2nd season of this contract.
6. Jean Degros (Shanghai) 4 years @ $10.0M AAV + 5th year TO
As a backup PG, and only 24 years old with future TCs in doubt, a guaranteed 4 year deal at this point could be a waste of $10M per year. I think there were better options for a backup type PG for much cheaper and shorter term.
5. Jeff Ruland (Sarawak) 4 years @ 6.1M AAV
For a 30 year old 6-10 C that can’t block shots, 4 years of guaranteed money is a tough pill to swallow. This contract will be burden as early as year 2 or 3, the only good thing is that it’s not for too much money
4. George Mikan (Moscow) 3 years @ 5.2M AAV
At 33 years old, 3 years of guaranteed money is an unnecessary term commitment for Mikan. As with Ruland, its not so bad because they money isn’t a lot.
3. Pau Gasol (Brazil) 4 years @ 22.4M AAV
The only reason this deal isn’t #1 is because Pau will be a force for at least the first half of this contract. But the reason it is on this list to begin with is because of the large amounts this contract will be paying when Pau is 33 and 34.
2. Anthony Mason (Aalborg) 3 years @ 12.0M AAV + 4th year TO
Although his ratings look good, Mason has been a terrible player in the first 4 years of his career. With a 1.05 career PPS and 11.7 career PER, the team is better off with him off the court. Hopefully a change of scenery will get him playing to his potential, otherwise this money could have been spent better.
1. Paul Pierce (Portland) 5 years @ 12.4M AAV
The Truth was one of my favourite players growing up so it hurts seeing him die in this league. He is definitely still a serviceable player, and can be a starter on a decent team, but at 5 full years at this amount and with a few more TCs to go, this could be a move Portland regrets quickly.
Best Signings:
6. Damon Stoudamire (Vancouver) 1yr $3.8M
A small one year deal for serviceable PG on a contending team is always a nice move. He's older but could still factor, worst case he's there in case of injuries.
5. Charles Barkley (Minnesota) 1yr MIN
Although he’s 34, Barkley is still a good piece to have on the roster. On a 1 year min contract with no risk to Minnesota, even if he doesn’t get playing time just having the option is a nice.
4. Stanley Roberts (Brooklyn) 1yr @ $5.5M + 2nd year TO
After sitting out all of last season due to a contract dispute, the Nets grabbed Roberts with a 1 year MLE commitment. Given the fact that this was a weak FA class, and the team lacked front court depth, being able to add a guy like Roberts for no longterm risk should help the team’s chances this year.
3. Kelvin Ransey (Milan) 1yr MIN
Ransey is an excellent backup PG option for a team thats gunning for the playoffs, and like a lot of the other deals on this list, at 1 year minimum its a great move.
2. Nikola Jokic (New York) 1yr $10.0M + 2nd year TO
I like this deal because of the 1yr commitment. Jokic is a solid big that can help any team, and any other year I could see some GM give him this amount of money but for 4 or 5 years. I expect NY will ship him out at some point if there's a team willing to part with some future assets.
1. Wayne Estes (Vancouver) 1yr MIN
Although the way Vancouver ultimately landed Estes was controversial and classless, this is no doubt an excellent addition to the team. Estes was buried in the black hole that is San Fransisco, but I think with talent around him and a decent gameplan, he is still an excellent player and worth a lot more than a min contract.
