Review:
After having the best record in Eurasia last year, Sarawak went out and made massive changes to the roster. In fact the only starter that will be returning this year is PG, Chris Paul. Due to being right up against the hardcap the team had to make a convoluted series of moves to put together a team they feel will be right up there in the top 4 in the conference again this year. Out goes Andrew Bynum, Sheed Wallace, Sam Jones and Calvin Natt and in comes Cazzie Russell, MKG, Eugene Shue, Steve Kerr and Marc Gasol. The results are a very different style of team and one that is more reflective of the type of team I ran in legends with athelticism and defense being built around an excellent PG and C. In free agency the team signed way too many bigs using split MLE's and minimums and after all of it's wheeling and dealing is a bit short beyond it's top 8 in the rotation.
Projected Lineup:
C Marc Gasol
PF MKG
SF Cazzie Russell
SG Eugene Shue
PG CP3
3rd Guard: Steve Kerr
3rd Post: Jim Chones
3rd Wing: Dave Winfield
Summary:
Outside of the question of if Shue is ready to start as a rookie or if Steve Kerr should be the starting SG, this is a pretty potent lineup. It is full of good atheltes, passers and defenders with mayube not quite the emphasis on the ability to shoot from the perimeter the GM is known for favoring in the pass. The bench is a mix of really strong or really deep. A really strong third guard situation with Steve Kerr is off set by Foots Walker being the 4th guard and hopefully only playing mop up minutes with nothing of note behind it. Wing has a proven fit for the system in Dave Winfield who only really scores in transition and on put backs. Downlown the team has a bevy of options led by Chones, Olsen and Aydan which gives the team some versatility. This roster will go as far as CP3 and Gasol can lead them with a host or very talented role players hopefully being enough behind a big two.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: Defense. If the team plays a slow pace they might hold the opposition to 95 points per game, the defense is that good.
The Bad: Bench scoring. Outside of Kerr there is not much offensive firepower off the bench.
The Ugly: Deep guard depth. The first three guards are a good mix, not the best in the league but a nice deep trio. Beyond that the team better hope for no injuries as it is nothing but question marks.
Projection:
Projected Record: 57-25, 2nd in Eurasia East, Conference Title Contender
Exceed projection if: They stay healthy, the role players score enough and they add some depth at guard.
Does not meet projection if: Injuries on the perimeter cause problems and/or the teams reliance on atheltic, defensive minded roleplayers backfires.
