Review:
Cleveland has quietly been building a quality roster the past few years and they certainly sped that process up this off season adding the indomitable Shaq to the team via a block buster trade with the Vikings. In free agent they retained two really important pieces in D'Angelo Russell and Josh Howard. Russell is one of the smoothest players in the league and will be the engine that makes this team go. In a nutshell, Cleveland rocks after going all in this off season and they should be set up to return to the playoffs after adding depth last year in the versatile Ryan Gomes.
Projected Lineup:
C Shaq
PF Ryan Gomes
SF Josh Howard
SG D'Angelo Russell
PG Malbert Pradd
3rd Guard: Not on the roster...
3rd Post: Rudy Gobert or Fran Vazquez
3rd Wing: Xavier McDaniel?
Summary:
Four really well put together pieces in the starting lineup with Shaq, Howard, Russell and Pradd forming a fearsome foursome. I really like their 5th starting Ryan Gomes, but his best role maybe as a 6th man for this team. Pradd and Russell should combine for about 40 ppg while providing solid passing and rebounding for guards. Shaq is another 25ppg or so, meaning that the offensive shouldn't be a problem. They have good depth downlow with 3-4 servicable options depending on what they need. Gobert can block shots and rebound, Vazquez is a solid all around options and XMan and/or Lucas can give minutes. The problems is I don't see who they can give meaningul minutes to at the 3 perimeter positions off the bench. There really isn't a third guard ready to play so they will need to score the waiver wire for one and the same can be said at SF.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: The Starting 5. Among the best in the league in terms of talent and fit together.
The Bad: Wing depth. Almost non existent, especially if they want or need to go small.
The Ugly: Guard depth. Their backup guards wouldn't play on rebuilding teams at this point, so they will need to address this moving forward
Projection:
Projected Record: 46-36, Make Playoffs
Exceed projection if: They avoid injuries to their starting backcourt and add some sort of quality bench depth on the perimeter
Does not meet projection if: They have any injuries and don't address the perimeter depth
