Review:
When you list losing Robert Horry as a key loss, you know you are rebuilding. Boca Juniors has done a good job this year of continuing the rebuilding process, in a more measured way than some other teams we have seen. They have a clear focus on defense with a lot of defensive minded players on the roster like Augmon, Laimbeer, Eaton etc. They did a good job last year of adding a very skilled PF on a rookie deal in Marvin Barnes and in the draft they added another defensive stalwart in Dennis "the worm" Rodman and the alpha scorer on the perimeter they needed in Drazen Petrovic. Skiles and Brobvosky were solid late first round picks who have a chance to contribute to the team long term. In Free Agency the team signed Emmual Mudiay to a three year deal north of 12 million a season. I am not a huge fan of thise bc Mudiay had an iffy TC at some point, on the other hand he is young and productive so it wasn't a terrible risk and filled a need. This rebuild will be keyed by how Drazen does, if he becomes an explosive offesive SG this team is on the right path.
Projected Lineup:
C Bill Laimbeer
PF Marvin Barnes
SF Stacey Augmon
SG Drazen Petrovic
PG Emmanual Mudiay
3rd Guard: Scott Skiles
3rd Post: Mark Eaton
3rd Wing: Dennis Rodman
Summary:
The oldest player in the rotation is 27 year old Stacey Augmon. This is a team that will live and die on the defensive end and as mentioned earlier is starting to shape up well with key pieces like Barnes and Petrovic surrounded by role players like Augmon, Rodman and Mudiay. The team probably will need to upgrade the Center position long term to get into the playoffs and Mudiay may be better suited as a 3rd guard long term, but this is a team that had a sneaky good offseason and is slowly building the right way. I would have probably gone with Maurice Stokes over Rodman and gone a bit small with a frontcourt of Barnes and Stokes, but Rodman fits the teams style to a T.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: Roster Construction. They may not have quite enough offense to make a leap to the playoffs this year but this is a team with a clear plan they are executing. Drafting rookies and signing free agents that fit a clear identity. I am not sure of this teams ceiling long term, again I think they need some clarity at PG and C long term still, but this team is going to be a royal pain in the ass to play against with it's defense and toughness.
The Bad: The youth is being served and that means some growing pains.
The Ugly: PG is pretty ugly right now, Mudiay is a nice player but not quite a PG, hopefully they can address this spot in the next draft or via trade.
Projection:
Projected Record: 37-45, Miss Playoffs
Exceed projection if: Mudiay is better than I think and Drazen is ready to go from day 1 or they trade for an upgrade at Center or PG
Does not meet projection if: The focus on defense leaves not enough offense on the floor with the lack of a stud PG and an offensive minded center
