Review:
Piraeus came into the off season as one of the strongest teams in the league. A year after winning it all, the team "struggled" a bit and finished last year at 50-32. It is clear from the moves the team has made that they were not happy with how last year went and they have added quite a bit to a team. This aggressive mindset means that both players they drafted are no longer on the roster and also that they made 5 trades of them over the off season, three of them with Milan. I didn't realize that Seer and GP and competition in the spare parts movement racket, but apparently they do! The net result is the loss of some depth but the addition of some higher end talent and some better fits. Terry Dischinger may never be a star, but he is an efficient offensive player who will give a team built primarily on defense another guy who can help out McHale and Hondo with the scoring. IN one of the more interesting storylines of the off season the team signed Randy Brown who looks like an excellent third guard, had to cut him due to the hardcap, cleared cap room and brought him back. Despite having only about 10 proven players on the roster at the time of publication, this team is really loaded and probably the favorite in the conference this season.
Projected Lineup:
C Dikembe Mutumbo
PF Kevin McHale
SF Terry Dischinger
SG John Havlicek
PG Frank Johnson
3rd Guard: Randy Brown or Ronnie Lester
3rd Post: Channing Frye
3rd Wing: Keith Bogans
Summary:
One of the strongest roster in terms of two deep in the league. The once removed Champs have a good mix of elite offensive players (McHale), scorers (Hondo and Terry D) and defensive anchors (Frank Johnson and Dikembe Mutumbo). The depth is good with 4 players who would be in most teams top 8 off the bench in Brown, Lester, Fry and Bogans. The weaknesses are nitpicky at best, if a guy like Magloire has to play major minutes or either SF gets hurt the teams performance should drop. However, this will be a tough team on both ends of the floor due to the balance and depth.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: Fixing their biggest weakness. When you start both Frank Johnson and Dikembe you gain a lot defensively but it can bog down the scoring a bit as that is neither players fortay. Terry D is a perfect fit on paper in that regard as he provides that scoring and doesn't have to be the man with McHale and Hondo already in the picture.
The Bad: For the rest of the league is their talent level is great and their cohesion is already good despite all the moves.
The Ugly: Frontcourt athelticism outside of McHale. This is being very picky but if I was to find one obvious chink in the team's armor their post players outside of McHale are not very atheltic. Teams that are atheltic across the board "may" give them a lot of problems
Projection:
Projected Record: 62-20, 1st in Eurasia East, Conference Title Favorites
Exceed projection if: They do what they are supposed to do and stay injury free. The regular season is not the measure of teams built like this.
Does not meet projection if: Mutumbo, Magloire and Frye's limited athelticism really matters aka McHale gets hurt.
