Review:
Franca is in the process of rebuilding and has added a couple of nice pieces this off season via the draft in the 4th overall pick, Ron Harper and the 23rd overall pick, Chuck Person. Harper needs to fill out, but has the chance to be an elite guard on both ends of the floor. Person, somehow slipped to 23 and gives the team a future scorer in the starting lineup at SF. Outside of that the team signed a couple of veteran free agents in Radivoj Korac and Michael Jordan. Both are past their primes but should be able to produce and may draw some trade interest at the deadline.
Projected Lineup:
C Michael Olowokandi
PF Antonio McDyess
SF Michael Jordan
SG Ron Harper
PG Rory Sparrow
3rd Guard: Kyle Macy
3rd Post: Chris Gatling
3rd Wing: Chuck Person
Summary:
A mix of vets and young talents make up the rotation this year for Brazil. Harper is the catalyst moving forward and players like Olowokandi and Person have a chance to be solid pieces as well. This year it will be about developing those players while also giving vets like McDyess and Jordan a chance to showcase to contenders that they still have something left in the tank. The team lacks a ton of depth in the backcourt but on the wing both Person and Brewer should stick long term, as should Gatling and maybe Pachulia in the post.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: Harper falling to four and Person falling to 23 gives the team two potential starters out of this class. More work to do, but the cupboard is not bare.
The Bad: How much gas in the tank. The vets can all be gone after this year so the capspace will be there, but the question is how much gas do they have left and will it be enough to bring in more youth moving forward?
The Ugly: PG. It's a lead guard's world and this team currently doesn't have any long term fixes at PG. Sparrow is a solid backup on a good team and nothing more.
Projection:
Projected Record: 18-64, miss playoffs
Exceed projection if: They can showcase their veterans and add more assets and somehow add a young PG
Does not meet projection if: Korac and Jordan are done, leaving McDyess and a bunch of kids to fend for themselves
