Review:
Madrid has moved fully into the rebuilding process and has done well in collecting assets this off season. First off during the draft they added Len Bias with the 6th pick of the draft. Bias looks like an elite scorer from 18 feet and in who should be able to defend and rebound at a solid level for the SF spot. A scary athlete he will be a difference maker down the line. Then REAL sped up the rebuilding process by stealing away Spaniard, Marc Gasol in free agency. At 28 Gasol is in his prime and the team capitalized that by shipping him out in a deal that brought back Sam Jones, Calvin Natt, Neal Walk and a future Bamberg first. Then Jones was flipped for an expiring contract and another rookie, Jack Twyman. So a free addition was turned into capspace next off season, three guys on rookie deals and a first round pick. This is how you rebuild party people.
In Free Agency the team signed a bunch of young, athletic depth pieces some will stick some will not.
Projected Lineup:
C Neal Walk
PF Cliff Robinson
SF Len Bias
SG Paul Pierce
PG Juan Antonio Corbalan
3rd Guard: Vince Carter
3rd Post: Janis Krumins
3rd Wing: Calvin Natt
Summary:
The team is young and even tho the pieces don't fit together right now, this year is all about figuring out what they have among all of this youth. Bias is a great building block and Cliff Robinson was a great pick last year. If Walk and Natt can reach their potentials that will be 4 good starting quality players on the roster. The team will need to add backcourt pieces moving forward to launch themselves out of full rebuild and into upcoming young team.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: Young, forwards abound. Bias looks like a star in the making, Natt was strong off the bench last year for Sarawak at forward and on the block Robinson was a very nice suprise last year and Walk looks like he has a bright future as well.
The Bad: Busted lotto talents. Paul Pierce, Vince Carter come on down you are next on the Pick is Wrong. Both still can carve out roles in the league, but both have suffered from bad TCs early in their careers.
The Ugly: The backcourt. Juan Antonio Corbalan has really fallen off as did Hershey Hawkins just over a year ago those two looked like a top notch future backcourt.
Projection:
Projected Record: 21-461, Miss Playoffs
Exceed projection if: Guys progress rapidly and some of the excess is traded for a young guard to pair with the forwards and posts.
Does not meet projection if: The young guys who look ready are not actually ready.
