Review:
An interesting off season in the Kremlin started with the signing of all world scout Jacinto Cuellar, who gives a team who has a stated focus that is a "weird hybrid of contending and retooling" (Jones, C. 2016) an edge up on the competition. One of the first thing the regime did was trade Andre Drummond to the Lakers in return getting guards Jarrett Jack and Martell Webster along with the 5th pick in the draft. There is no denying Drummonds talent, but the regime was not comfortable with keying a player who goes to the line a ton and to whom DeAndre Jordan's FT Prowess is given favorable reviews. Apparently in Soviet Russia, Atlanta Hawks run you, because the team used the pick from the Drummond trade along with the number 10 pick in the draft to add Bob Pettit and SF Jamal Mashburn. This looks to be a pretty offensively explosive forward pairing for the future.
In Free Agency the team re-signed Center Chris Kaman to a 5 year max contract. While some people question if he has the athelticism for such a big deal, Kaman quietly put up 19.8 points, 10.8 boards, 3.3 assists and 2.0 block last year. He is the unquestioned anchor to the team down low with Drummond out of the picture and hits his FTs. The team also signed Steve Mix, which is barely worth mentioning...
Projected Lineup:
C Chris Kaman
PF Bob Pettit
SF Antonello Riva
SG Jarrett Jack
PG Tony Parker
3rd Guard: Andrew Toney
3rd Post: Tom "by default" Chambers
3rd Wing: Jamal Mashburn
Summary:
Kaman and Pettit seem to compliment each other and will both score, it would not be a suprise to see this duo combine for 38 points and 20 boards a night. Riva and Mashburn gives the team two good scorers on the wing, I would anticipate the more well rounded Riva starting. In the backcourt the depth is good with Parker and Jack making for a do it all starting duo and Toney and Webster being good pieces in the rotation. The team has very little depth with only 11 players currently on the roster and has nothing behind it's starting posts that should be seeing minutes. Despite likely taking a step back record wise, this team is set to be really good moving forward.
Three Thoughts:
The Good: The starting lineup will be very good, especially in the front and backcourt spots. Parker and Jack might be the most underated duo in the league right now in the back court and Kaman and Pettit will be a force scoring wise and on the glass.
The Bad: General depth. 11 guys on the roster and right now 3 of them are just bodies drawing paychecks.
The Ugly: Post Depth. They have three bigs on the roster and the backup big shouldn't be seeing the floor unless it a blowout. This will kill this team if not fixed.
Projection:
Projected Record: 37-45, Miss Playoffs
Exceed projection if: Get good depth at the post and PG and they can reverse this record potentially.
Does not meet projection if: Any injuries at all down low and this team is sunk as currently constructed.
