The first period of Free Agency has passed and I think it's safe to say that this was arguably the most highly anticipated Free Agency period we've had since Ultimate started. With contraction taking place this off-season, there was an added level of uncertainty in regards to certain player's future and that combined with this just simply being a deep class meant that the league as a whole was interested in seeing how things played out. In the end we saw a total of 73 transactions, with 26 of those being re-signings and 47 players finding new homes. 28 of the 32 teams made a move of some kind with only Sarawak Fire Horse BC, Bamberg Brose Baskets, Perth Wildcats, and Anadolu Istanbul not getting involved. So in this article I want to take the time to go team by team and recap/review the opening period of the 2007 Ultimate ABCA Free Agency period. So let's get started:
Aisin Seahorses Sign C Jason Collins for $1,380,000 over one year.

Aisin Seahorses Sign C Stanley Roberts for $5,500,000 over one year.
Aisin Seahorses Sign PG Daniel Gibson for $456,000 over one year.
Aisin Seahorses Sign SF Julius Erving for $1,428,000 over one year.
Aisin Seahorses Sign SF Rick Fox for $2,500,000 over one year.
- Mikawa Aisin Seahorses had a bit of a busy day one for a team that only had minimums and exceptions to work with. Bringing in 5 new names, including players such as Jason Collins who was a backup big man on the solid Olympiacos team from last season, undrafted free Agent Daniel Gibson, and former 3x ABCA All-Star Julius Erving all on minimum contracts. Their two main acquisitions were Low Level Exception signing Rick Fox who is coming off of his rookie contract with Olimpia & Mid Level Exception signing Stanley Roberts who is also coming off of his rookie contract spending the first half of it with Chicago before finishing up with Moscow CSKA. Neither man got much of an opportunity with Fox playing behind Kiki Vandewedghe & Chris Mullin, and Roberts not fitting the unconventional lineups Moscow ran last year. With Bill Russell, David West, Antawn Jamison, and a few others neither man is guaranteed a big role on their new team either but I do believe both signings have the potential to be quality ones for the team.

Aoshen Re-sign SG Kevin Loughery for $66,750,000 over 4 years.
Aoshen Re-sign C Hakeem Olajuwon for $28,584,283 over 2 years.
- Beijing Aoshen were able to bring back two members that were key in their run last season for a combined $95,334,283 ($28,775,558 starting salary) in Kevin Loughery and Hakeem Olajuwon. There were a few more signings but due to the Beijing going over the hard cap, the remaining signings became null and void. Both of these guys will have a big impact for Aoshen once again but that's only if they can afford to keep both players. As it stands, the team has no way of staying at or below 80 million in spent cap while fielding a full 12 man roster. The ideal situation would be to move another player but right now the most likely scenario is one of these two (or Mikan) moving. But for now, these are both great re-signings for the team especially when you realize Hakeem Olajuwon could've made over 20 million per year.

Boca Juniors Sign SF Stacey Augmon for $46,970,000 over 4 years.
The new Buenos Aires Boca Juniors GM continues to make this roster his own after taking over a while back. After trading away Kevin Durant to begin to groom Jamaal Wilkes for the Small Forward spot, and adding guys like Laimbeer, Eaton, and Strickland to Lou Hudson, TJ Ford, and the aforementioned Wilkes, they decided to add former Zamalek & Warriors player Stacey Augmon to the fold as well. Augmon isn't known for his offense which has been the main reason some around the league have been a bit disappointed in his play but if you look at him for what he is, a quality defender on both the perimeter & post, then this is a solid signing for Buenos Aires. It isn't clear where he'll play - whether it be Small Forward, Power Forward, or off the bench - but one thing you can say is this team is building quite the defensive identity.

Bulls Re-sign PF Al Horford for $117,731,250 over 5 years.
Bulls Re-sign SG Ronnie Fields for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Much like Beijing Aoshen, this team's Free Agency was all about bringing back their own players. Unlike Beijing Aoshen the price was quite a bit higher for the Chicago Bulls to accomplish this. Now don't get me wrong, both men are worth what they got but moving forward this team will definitely have some decisions to make with how this roster is currently constructed. But for next year, if they decide to keep things together I expect Horford & Fields will work with Turner & Embiid to make sure this team is a playoff contender once again.

Cavaliers Re-sign PG Malbert Pradd for $2,000,000 over 2 years.
Cavaliers Sign C Bob Kurland for $1,428,000 over one year.
Cavaliers Sign C Kevin Willis for $1,428,000 over one year.
Cavaliers Sign C Spencer Hawes for $1,110,000 over one year.
Cavaliers Sign PF Mel Daniels for $1,428,000 over one year.
Cavaliers Sign PF Xavier McDaniel for $6,000,000 over 2 years.
The Cleveland Cavaliers had more signings than any other team on Free Agency day one which was to be expected since they had way more cap space than any other team. However personally I expected them to aim a bit higher when it came to their targets knowing the type of talent that was out there this off-season. Even if just to sign & trade, I figured they'd go over a few bigger names. But looking at what they got it was mainly an assortment of bigs on the downside of their career. However the signing of Malbert Pradd for a million per year was one that I personally was a fan of. I doubt he has a large role on this team but there are rumors that he got at least one Mid-Level Exception offer that he was close to signing before the money was used on someone else so to get him for 4.5 million less starting is a quality deal. I suspect that FA Day 2 will be a bit more newsworthy for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Celtics Sign SF Cazzie Russell for $64,050,000 over 4 years.
- Cazzie Russell was one of the more interesting cases heading into the free agency class. He has quietly been emerging as a really nice two way player on a team that no one pays attention to so determining how much money he'd get this off-season was impossible. The Celtics clearly saw him as a player that could be a big part of their core because they gave him a maximum contract with the intention to pair him with Greg Oden, Chris Webber, and Rick Barry. I'm not entirely sure how the Barry - Russell pairing will be set up because both could potentially play either wing position despite SF likely being the best spot for both but I definitely like the move. These are the type of moves this team needs to work their way up the standings.

CSKA Re-sign PG Tony Parker for $101,700,000 over 5 years.
New CSKA Moscow GM made a splash pre-FA by trading their recent draft pick to land Sam Jones and Jerry Sloan which added a ton of talent to their roster but in turn limited what they'd be able to do in Free Agency. But this team still did the one thing that they HAD to do and that was bring back Tony Parker. Obviously this was a bit pricey but it's without a question worth it because with Parker - Jones - Sloan - Kaman - Drummond and the recent move to the Eurasian conference this team should be able to get back to the playoffs after missing by 2 games last year.

Eagles Sign SF Detlef Schrempf for $4,150,000 over 2 years.
- This was an interesting signing to see because Detlef Schrempf was the starting Small Forward on Piraeus Olympiacos BC last season who are the team that upset Newcastle in the finals to win the title. So while some may look at the Detlef signing as nothing of note, taking a starter away from one of your main competitors is always a big plus in my opinion. It's a cheap deal and he likely won't have to play much with guys like Baylor and Winslow ahead of him so this was a very solid signing for Newcastle.

Franca BC Sign SF Richard Jefferson for $1,380,000 over one year.
- I'm rooting for Brazil Franca BC long term but after only winning 29 games last year (w/ Charles Barkley for part of the season) and then having their marquee signing be a guy that hasn't been able to crack a rotation and stick for the past 2 seasons, I'll just say that it's a good thing that they have their pick this upcoming season. There's not a ton to say here about their free agency because while RJ is a solid player, he's not going to change anything for this team. It'll be interesting to see if they decide to add anything different on day 2.

Fubon Braves Re-sign PG Isiah Thomas for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Fubon Braves Re-sign SG Paul Westphal for $12,000,000 over 2 years.
- Another team who came into the off-season with the sole focus of bringing their own players back and with how good Isiah Thomas has become, there definitely was no reason for there to be anything more important for Fubon. I will say that this team somehow using their 13-ish million in cap space before Isiah Thomas re-signed would've been huge but you never know what was on the trade market for certain teams so that's not something I can really comment on. Thomas & to a lesser extent Westphal coming back allows this team to continue with the core that has kept them in the playoffs for the past 4 seasons. It'll be interesting to see what their next move will be after this but for now, Taipei has made all the necessary moves to ensure they continue to perform at a respectable level.

Grizzlies Sign SF Terry Dischinger for $64,050,000 over 4 years.
- One of the many teams to benefit from the Titans deciding they wanted to be contracted was the Vancouver Grizzlies who scored big by landing Terry Dischinger. While he may not be the talent that Jason Kidd or Joe Dumars are, he is quite a bit younger than both so that made him the more appealing option to certain teams. If he can take his game to an even higher level than it was at for his breakout year last season then he goes from one of the best signings this off-season to arguably the best one. Where he will fit into a team that definitely wasn't lacking in front court talent w/ Alonzo Mourning, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Kristaps Porzingis will be something to watch but i'm a big believer in "acquire whatever talent you can and figure out the fit later" so this was a signing that I really liked.

Jazz Re-sign PF Wilson Chandler for $30,000,000 over 3 years.
Jazz Re-sign PG Greg Minor for $30,000,000 over 2 years.
Jazz Sign PG Jason Kidd for $67,398,581 over 3 years.
- The New Orleans Jazz were talking rebuild in this upcoming season after a solid but not amazing 42 win campaign last season. However after bringing back (former New York Knicks) Wilson Chandler & Greg Minor and getting walking triple double Jason Kidd thanks to the Titans getting contracted, I suspect they will be reevaluating their plans. All 3 players are on very respectable contracts for what they provide so I could still see them deciding to rebuild by moving these guys for future assets but I could also see them sticking with these guys. Whether they continue to rebuild or decide to win, all 3 of these signings were strong ones for this franchise.

KK Partizan Sign SG Joe Dumars for $62,761,838 over 3 years.
- Another team that benefited from the Titans being contracted is Belgrade KK Partizan who now look poised to return to the playoffs after a 3 year hiatus. Belgrade KK Partizan was going to sign someone this off-season as they appear to have been very active in sending bids out to free agents, so it was a bit of luck that they signed one of the marquee free agents in Joe Dumars before anyone else could sign. Say what you want about Dumars' age but on a 2+team option deal, this was an amazing get for Belgrade. Dumars has shown that he is capable of being a 22 - 7 - 8 guy as recently as last year and even if he dips below that in the next two seasons, you're still looking at a guy that along with Dirk, B.Walton, Darko, and L.Walton will be big in helping this team win games.

Knicks Re-sign C Larry Nance for $77,625,000 over 5 years.
Knicks Sign PG Kenny Anderson for $24,475,000 over 4 years.
Knicks Sign PG Walt Frazier for $1,428,000 over one year.
- The Knicks have been pretty active since the off-season started, trading away John Stockton, trading away Tom Heinsohn, and adding Kevin Durant and Marc Gasol. But when it all came down to it, they made it clear that this off-season was about one player and that's Larry Nance. He's been with their team since he was drafted and has won multiple titles and awards in that time so they clearly didn't have to think twice about giving him a five year extension. What was actually noteworthy about his extension was the fact that he took nearly 10 million less than he could have been offered by the Knicks to come back. This discount allowed the team to go out and sign Kenny Anderson to a mid-level deal to help sure up their PG spot. It also allowed them to bring in veteran Walt Frazier who despite his age, did well as a starter on Belgrade KK Partizan last season. This team clearly has some work to do in the depth department still but this has been a great start to the free agency period for them.

Lakers Re-sign SF Gary Harris for $8,000,000 over one year.
Lakers Sign C Samuel Dalembert for $1,428,000 over one year.
Lakers Sign PF Adreian Payne for $17,737,500 over 3 years.
- The Los Angeles Lakers had some signings this off-season that I really liked, it just sucks that a couple of them had to be removed due to them going over the hard cap. However lets look at the ones that weren't because there are definitely still some positives here. Gary Harris was a member of their roster when they were in Barcelona and the team knows that with him they get a respectable 3 & D player that will likely find time off their bench, then you have Samuel Dalembert who likely won't be expected to do much for this team but at a minimum salary, he's got height and some defensive skills that could be really helpful if he has a nice training camp. But their best signing has to be that of Adreian Payne who just 2 seasons ago was an 18.5 - 8.0 - 1.0 guy in around 31 MPG before having his minutes limited some last year. He's not your prototypical center but adding him adds another layer to the Lakers already versatile roster.

Maccabi Sign SF Cuttino Mobley for $5,800,000 over 2 years.
This was a pretty quiet FA Day One for Maccabi as they continue to retool their roster using part of their exception. Their GM mentioned looking towards the future moving forward and that is what this signing looks like to me. At 24 years old, Cuttino Mobley has the potential to grow into something solid. At worst he appears to have the potential to be a quality backup for them and at this price, you can't really complain about that.

Nets Re-sign C Arvydas Sabonis for $42,176,205 over 2 years.
Nets Sign SG Gilbert Arenas for $11,412,500 over 2 years.
- The Brooklyn Nets continue to add to what has been a really interesting off-season for them as they look to position themselves for their first playoff appearance in 5 seasons. Arvydas Sabonis got a big 1 + TO deal which is the exact contract he should've gotten here and he'll add to an already strong front court. Their other signing was Gilbert Arenas who I admittedly forgot was in the league to a 1 + TO MLE deal which is a quality deal despite him dropping off a bit in the last season or so. So now this team walks out of FA Day 1 w/
C: Arvydas Sabonis | Vladimir Tkachenko
PF: Charles Barkley | Anthony Mason
SF: Magic Johnson (although he really should be playing PG) | John Drew
SG: Devin Booker | Gilbert Arenas
PG: Rajon Rondo | Zoran Slavnic (although this could go either way)
That's a playoff team if all goes as plan in my opinion. If this team continues to build off of what they've been doing then they could be setup really well for the next few seasons.

Olimpia Sign SG Khris Middleton for $5,075,000 over 2 years.
Olimpia Sign SG Tim Hardaway Jr. for $666,000 over one year.
This was a pretty solid first free agency for Ultimate ABCA's newest GM as they signed/re-signed two likely starters for them, Charlie Villaneuva and Khris Middleton, as well as a young 3 point shooter, Tim Hardaway Jr, that they get to try out in Summer League and Pre-Season to decide whether he deserves a roster spot since he's a minimum contract. Both Charlie and Middleton are guys that I thought could potentially get a bit more money thrown at them as non-flashy but effective players. Middleton especially is an interesting case since he is now making 2.5 million starting after he came from making max dollars before being forced back into free agents due to contraction. If this team uses their bird rights to bring back Terrell Brandon then I think we will see an improved Milan Olimpia team from a season ago.

Olympiacos BC Re-sign SF Kelly Tripucka for $24,920,000 over 4 years.

Raptors Re-sign C Tyson Chandler for $104,895,000 over 5 years.
Raptors Sign PG Marcus Banks for $810,000 over one year.
Raptors Sign SG David Wesley for $1,380,000 over one year.
- I mentioned that teams wouldn't hesitate to pay Tyson Chandler in my last article and I think his extension with the Raptors shows I was right. Marcus Banks and David Wesley are basically just pre-season bench pieces at best so I won't spend much time on them but both are minimum contracts so either they work and they stick around or the don't and they are cut for free, no really risk for Toronto with either signing. Back to Tyson Chandler, there was some question about what the Raptors would do next after trading star Larry Johnson for Carmelo Anthony and Michael Jordan but with Chandler back in the fold, I think it's clear to see that this team still intends to make a playoff push. Between Jordan, Melo, and maybe even an improved Marvin Barnes we could finally see Tyson Chandler slide into the 3rd or 4th best player role that I believe he is best suited for. While it's a lot of money to pay for a guy in that role, I don't think the Raptors were the only one willing to pay the price so it was either pay up or lose him and I don't think Toronto to go with the 2nd option. At only 26, he'll be at most 31 when his contract ends so I personally have no real problem with this deal and I'm pretty interested to see where this group goes next.

REAL Re-sign PF Grant Hill for $20,020,000 over one year.
REAL Madrid was another team that signed quite a few players only to have their contracts voided due to the hard cap. In the end, they walked out of Day One of Free Agency with only Grant Hill in terms of signings. Now while I like the Grant Hill signing, I think even the REAL Madrid GM would admit that this signing won't move the needle for them in terms of playoffs vs. no playoffs. With that said, I expect Grant Hill will be moved before the season starts if i'm being honest. The only rough thing is that at 20.02 million, it'll be tricky finding a contending team that can take him on and give up something that can help Madrid in the future. I somewhat expected Hill to get a smaller 1 + TO deal that would've made him a bit more desirable in a sign & trade scenario but I'm sure the Madrid GM will figure things out. In the end, Hill is a good addition for this team, maybe not for what he'll do as a part of their team but as a trade piece he'll eventually give them something which is better than letting him walk for nothing.

Sharks Sign PG Brian Shaw for $666,000 over one year.
Sharks Sign SF Dimitris Diamantidis for $23,167,044 over 2 years.
Much like my coverage of the Raptors, I'll mainly focus on the big signing because there is not much to be said about Brian Shaw on a minimum contract. Dimitiris Diamantidis on the other hand was an interesting pickup for Shanghai as he adds to an already solid bench including guys like Kenyon Martin, Nate Robinson, Dick Van Arsdale, and Vince Carter. I say bench because while he has the ability to start, this team already has a clear starting lineup of Degros - Ellis - Giannis - Aldridge - Towns in my opinion for next season. On basically a one year deal, you could do a lot worse than a guy that is going to defend, score efficiently from the perimeter, and move the ball. This was a solid signing for a team that I believe is on the upswing.

Spurs Re-sign SF Steve Smith for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
I'm not going to follow the trend of pilling onto the Spurs which has been seen from the league after this deal was signed but I will say I was surprised to see Steve Smith get maxed. I see that there is potential with Steve Smith, especially offensively, so I get the offer in that regard and the Spurs still have max cap space in every one of the following seasons so this deal may not be seen as a big deal to their GM. On the flip side, Steve Smith probably could've been had for a few million less that could've given the team even more cap space moving forward while accomplishing the same thing talent wise. The Spurs are another GM that I am rooting for personally so I'd be glad to see Steve Smith continue to fill out and play up to this contract but for now this is a bit of a risky contract for the team.

Supersonics Re-sign PG Randy Brown for $12,000,000 over 2 years.
Supersonics Re-sign SF Glenn Robinson for $12,000,000 over 2 years.
The Seattle Sonics made a splashy trade earlier in the off-season in attempt to build off of their best season since joining ABCA (both Legends & Ultimate). After acquiring Larry Johnson to add to Damon Stoudamire, Dario Saric and Patrick Ewing it was clear that this team's main need heading into Free Agency was a Shooting Guard so I am a bit surprised that they didn't land one here on day one. However even without landing a Shooting Guard, the re-signings of both Randy Brown and Glenn Robinson were solid deals for them because the team also needed depth. Brown who I prefer over Glenn Robinson will likely have the bigger impact and between him, Robinson, Redick, Barbosa, Stoudamire, and Volnov this team should be able to find a pair of wing players that give them a good shot at winning at a respectable rate next season.

Timberwolves Sign PF John Block for $5,187,500 over 2 years.
Timberwolves Sign SF Bill Hanzlik for $930,000 over one year.
Timberwolves Sign SF Mickael Pietrus for $11,412,500 over 2 years.
So first thing first, Minnesota Timberwolves were a very aggressive team in the early stages of Free Agency this season. It's no secret that they sent out maybe more bids than any other team in the league so it's not surprise that they picked up a few pieces here. Bill Hanzlik on a minimum is solid because while he isn't flashy, he is respectable in all areas on the defensive end. John Block will help sure up their big man rotation along with Garnett, Cauley-Stein, and LaFrentz. He's only 2 seasons removed from a 21 PPG outing so getting him for the Low Level Exception was a good move. Their final addition was Mickael Pietrus who they acquired with their Mid-Level Exception. Honestly I've never been huge on Pietrus but you can't deny that despite being a 2nd round pick, he's found a niche as a respectable defender in the league. Obviously he won't be expected to start but he's probably as good of a fit as you could find to place next to Allan Houston off the bench. Between Cunningham, Wiggins, Houston, Smith, and Pietrus this team has one of the better wing rotations in the league.

Trailblazers Re-sign C Dino Meneghin for $1,428,000 over one year.
Trailblazers Re-sign SF Antonello Riva for $43,859,250 over 3 years.
I have to say, I wasn't exactly sure where the Trailblazers stood with Antonello Riva this off-season after bringing in Bob Love and drafting Rudy Gay but at less than a mini-max over 2 years with a team option for a 3rd year, I think they made a great move bringing him back. I believe I mentioned it in my last article but I think Riva hurt his value by being injured for over a third of the season last year. His loss is Portland's gain though because at this price it was a no brainer to bring back a guy that gave them 18.4 PPG | 8.2 RPG | 5.0 APG | 1.5 SPG per 36 just last season. So I'll say it again, regardless of age this was a great re-signing for Portland.

Warriors Re-sign C Danny Schayes for $10,251,450 over 3 years.
Warriors Sign PF Bob McAdoo for $1,428,000 over one year.
Warriors Sign PF Tyler Zeller for $930,000 over one year.
Warriors Sign PG Austin Rivers for $774,000 over one year.
Warriors Sign SG Jeff Trepagnier for $1,110,000 over one year.
The Warriors were a bit busy on day one of Free Agency even if their moves weren't the "splashiest" out there. Outside of the Cavaliers, I don't think any team had more signings than them. A guy like Austin Rivers has some potential and Bob McAdoo, Tyler Zeller, JEff Trepagnier are vets that can fill in for spot minutes at worst for a competitive team. Their main signing was definitely Danny Schayes who finished off the season as a starter for them over Andrew Bogut as the team seemingly wanted more offensive on the court than defense. Signing a starter to a deal where he will never make more than 3.6 million in a season is a great deal in my opinion. This team has talent all over the court and I suspect that they will have an even better season than last time out.

Zamalek Re-sign SF Mark Aguirre for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Cairo Zamalek is another team that came into the off-season with the lone goal of bringing back one of their key pieces. This was the team's only bid on day one and that shows how important getting Aguirre back was for them. Last season they moved him into the starting lineup officially and he'd respond by averaging career highs in PPG, APG, and RPG and he was rewarded with a max deal. This is another case of, if they didn't pay him then someone else would have so this was a necessary deal. With Sprewell & Aguirre locked in, this GM likely is hoping to get back on track after faltering over the past two seasons.
