J.J. Redick
Right-Handed
Shooting Guard
6'4" 190 pounds
22 years old
Duke University
Hometown: Roanoke, Virginia
Strengths: First and foremost, JJ Redick is a knockdown shooter. He has shot 41% from 3 in both college and the NBA. He's good from mid-range, too, shooting 41% from 10-16 feet and 46% from 16-23 feet. He's also a stellar free throw shooter, at 89% for his career. Redick generally scores from running off screens, which means that offenses will have to make some effort to get him the ball, although he will not have it as much as he did in college. Finally, Redick is a very intelligent player, shooting high-percentage shots and generally making the right basketball play. He has a very high floor, being a good shooter off your bench.
Weaknesses: Redick is short for a SG and doesn't have much positional flexibility. Scouts wonder how his frail frame will hold up against more powerful Shooting Guards, and are concerned about his ability to defend quicker players. He lacks the athleticism to truly compete against top-level players. He shows no ability to play PG, although he has some ability to create for others and make smart plays. Aside from his rebounding, which is putrid, Redick in the NBA has addressed many of the weaknesses scouts pointed out early on. He managed to improve his ball handling and playmaking, diversity of scoring, ability to finish, and defense. While these are no longer glaring weaknesses, they are also not significant strengths. ABCA scouts wonder about Redick's ability to transition his game in the ABCA, since generally shooters without any other outstanding abilities are relegated to the bench. Finally, Redick has had some injury problems, so his future health and ability to stay on the floor could be concerning.
