Solomon Hill(#9)Height: 6-7 Weight: 225 lbs. Position: Small Forward Born: March 18, 1991 in Los Angeles, California Age Drafted: 22 College: University of Arizona Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
Solomon Hill is a good role player. You could do worse than throwing Solo out there as your 8th or 9th man. He fits into the NBA's new small-ball 4 position in part because he played PF in college and had to transition to the 3 in the NBA. He has enough range to draw PFs outside and enough quickness to blow past them. He's also significantly stronger than most professional SFs. Hill is basically a solid player on both ends. A team can throw him into the mix to guard positions 2-4 well, but he might also contribute a key three-pointer, dunk, or rebound. He will not drop 30 on anyone, but could be a good glue guy on a championship contender someday.
Weaknesses
Hill is not great at anything. The best feature of his game is probably his defense, which is good but nothing to give him too much praise over. Up until this past season, I would have said that Hill was a hard worker. He has improved on his handle, shooting, and driving ability significantly since college, but all are still below par for the NBA. Hill completely blew off last year's summer league and came into training camp out of shape. It took him about 2/3rds of the season to get into shape well enough to find a spot in the rotation. His weight and general rotund-ness have caused him problems for years and do not appear to be easing any time soon. Skill-wise, he will surprise you with his three-point shot, but it is far from consistent. His handle is good enough for his straight-line drives to the basket, but just about worthless otherwise. For a rather unathletic player, Hill attacks the basket without fear and tries to dunk everything, but does not have the quickness, lift, or balance to finish over professionals, sometimes even over the rim. His potential is limited.
