Cody Zeller(#40)Height: 7-0 Weight: 240 lbs. Position: Center Born: October 5, 1992 in Washington, Indiana Age Drafted: 21 College: Indiana University Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
The Big Handsome comes from a basketball family. His brothers, Luke and Tyler, have both been NBA players. Cody's game is a bit different from his brothers', though. He doesn't have the range that Luke does or the quickness and finishing ability that Tyler has, but is a much better all-around player. In college, he earned his reputation based on an emerging post-up and face-up game. While it was not the most polished, Zeller showed a few moves, a good straight line drive, and some finishing ability. In the NBA, he's had to transition his game from offensive focal point to supporting player, which is naturally a better fit. Zeller has a nice touch around the basket when he's not overpowered and has been active on the offensive glass. Perhaps what is most surprising for Indiana fans is Zeller's defensive activity in the NBA. Last season, he averaged just under a steal and block per game in 24 minutes and is improving his rebounding ability despite a lack of fundamentals or strength. Finally, Zeller is really showing promise in what is becoming a very valuable trait for a big man: pick and roll defense. He has quicker feet than you'd expect and his defensive basketball IQ is surprisingly good. He's turning into a very poor man's Joakim Noah on defense.
Weaknesses
While Zeller had a great collegiate career, he didn't quite live up to expectations, especially as the 2012-2013 preseason player of the year. The lack of refinement in his post game made him unreliable as a go-to player, and the rest of his game did not suffice. Zeller's collegiate weaknesses, such as this lack of refinement, lack of strength, and lack of jump shot, have become glaring in the NBA. He is no longer even a post consideration in the NBA, and despite his best efforts, is not strong enough to battle with NBA bigs. While he can finish above the rim at times, he's still easily knocked off balance and his T-Rex arms hurt him even more. Finally, Zeller shows flashes of a jump shot, but his FG% from 10-16 feet has declined in each NBA season. I would still take Zeller as a solid bench big man, but as he has developed so far, you are in trouble if he is your starter.
