Mitch Richmond(#23)Height: 6-5 Weight: 215 lbs. Position: Shooting Guard Born: June 30, 1965 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Age Drafted: 23 College: Kansas State University Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
A very underrated player, and recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, Richmond was an excellent offensively player.
Michael Jordan once said that Richmond was the toughest player he had to defense (source: www.washingtonpost.com/news/wizards-insider/wp/2014/04/08/former-wizard-mitch-richmond-elected-to-basketball-hall-of-fame/) He averaged 22 PPG immediately in his rookie year AND for the next decade in every single season. He was excellent at shooting from the outside (39%) and the line (85%). He was also good, but not elite, at slashing and getting to the line (.335 free throw rate).
For a wing, he was an excellent passer (5.5 APG in rookie year) and a very willing rebounder (7.7 RPG in rookie year). The passing in particular remained a strength for his entire career. Mitch was known as a reliable defender who had the right size and side to side quickness to stay in front of both shoot guards (his natural position), as well as small forwards.
Weaknesses
He wasn't a very effective offensively rebounder, averaging just 2.8% ORR for his career. He is turnover percentage could have been better, at 12.3% career, but not a huge liability. Mitch did not have much success in carrying his teams to the playoffs. He only reached them in 4 seasons of his career, and his title came when he was 36 and did not play. Mitch was the consummate 2nd banana with the right blend of skills to be a two-way player, but not a franchise player.
