Raef LaFrentz(#45)Height: 6-11 Weight: 240 lbs. Position: Center and Power Forward Born: May 29, 1976 in Hampton, Iowa Age Drafted: 22 College: University of Kansas Source: Basketball Reference |
Strengths
Raef's size, shooting ability, soft touch and shot-blocking earned him a lot of attention as a college athlete, and he ultimately landed as the 3rd overall pick in 1998. For being nearly 7 feet, he had the green light to shoot the three (averaged 2.3 3pt attempts per game on 36% shooting for this career). He wasn't the strongest post player but had nice touch around the basket. He finished top 6 in blocked shots in the league in 3 different season, and averaged more than 2 per game for 4 straight seasons in his early 20s. His best scoring season was in 2001-2002 when he averaged 13.5 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game and 2.7 blocks per game. He was a strong rebounder averaging 8.5 rebounds per 36 minutes in his career. Decent FT shooter for his size (71% on his career)
Weaknesses
While he was a scoring option for the early parts of his career, Raef never turned into a prolific scorer, finishing his career averaging just 10.1 points per game, and 14.1 per 36 minutes. By the age of 30 he was no longer a serviceable player. While he caused the defence to stretch and guard against his shooting, he could be shut down in the post by stronger, more skilled opponents. He was an above average ball handler for his size, but didn't rack up assists, averaging 1.1 assists per game on his career. Regularly got into foul trouble.
