Screw all these new movies. El Rey network is running a Rocky marathon all day today (1-5), and I have come to the personal conclussion that Rocky IV may have the best soundtrack of any movie ever. EL REY has a show called The Directors which I think is great. I wish they aired it more often. What exactly is The Directors? A docu-type thing? I may need to watch for it

Saw THE MARTIAN - it was alright. Going to see THE WALK 3D and SICARIO this week. Definitely want to see Sicario so you'll have to let me know how it is. Went and saw Maze Runner: Scorch Trials because the first one was pretty cool and why not? Wasn't disappointed, it pretty much met my expectations for a high school level post-apocalyptic movie.

Ok, in the past week I've seen THE MARTIAN (not just alright, very good John), SICARIO (top three of the year so far), BLACK MASS (that one was alright), THE WALK (liked it quite a bit, though I'm a JGL mark) and finally saw STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (really enjoyed it). After a rather mediocre summer, we have hit a really good period of movies...can't wait for CRIMSON PEAK this weekend.

I saw MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS the week it came out...it wasn't as good as the first one, which doesn't bode well for the last film next year, cause the last book in the series is a train wreck (though they strayed greatly from the second book after sticking pretty well to the first one). ...I need to read less young adult fiction.

So based on this, the books are not worth reading? As young adult trilogies go, it's not one of the better ones...the first book is pretty good, the second one is decent at best, and the last one is a disaster. Honestly, that's how most of the young adult trilogies go...A strong first book, a placeholder second book and a disappointing conclusion.

Felt like it was missing something.. fell flat for me.

Ok, this week's movie update...
BRIDGE OF SPIES was a really good film, classic Spielberg with one of Tom Hanks' strong performances in a while. CRIMSON PEAK was a minor disappointment...not a bad movie, but my expectations were too high I think. Jessica Chastain is amazing in everything she does, but the movie is too long and there isn't enough payoff. I finally saw EVEREST, which was a fine film, but Jake Gyllenhaal steals the show in his supporting role and I didn't care enough about anyone else in the movie. Honestly, I saw the superior mountain climbing documentary MERU before it, so if the order was reversed I think I might have liked it a tad more. I saw BACK TO THE FUTURE 1/2/3 in theaters for BTTF Day...3 is still my favorite, but I like 2 more when you watch all three in a row then when it is watched on it's own. It's still the worst of the bunch, but it's not the significant dropoff I had remembered.
Ok, so this weekend I have GOOSEBUMPS on the docket with the kids, but STEVE JOBS, ROOM and TRUTH all are hitting the area tonight...looks like crap like THE INTERN will keep getting pushed back.

Black Mass comes out here this weekend, I'm excited to see it. I read quite a bit about Bulger at one point, so hopefully they don't try to turn him into some sort of cartoon character. Sicario should be out here soon as well. No interest in The Martian, not my thing. Just went through Matt Damon's IMDB and I have to say I just don't really enjoy his movies anymore. Since 2007 he's done at best 2 movies that I've actually enjoyed. I really need to see Straight Outta Compton, but I don't even think it was in theaters here. I need to go on more dates, shit.

Black Mass was alright -- felt like they didn't establish much of a plot but it was still enjoyable.
Saw Steve Jobs today, I really liked it but again not much a plot like Black Mass.

SPECTRE was pretty meh. Why are all the recent Bond villains such lamers? Mendes hasn't allowed them to do enough large scale evil things imo. That's really the only thing I've noticed.

Man, got caught up in IFCs Resident Evil marathon yesterday. Those movies are so bad, but in a good way Just as I was going to be active today I saw ABC Family airing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and I don't think it's physically possible for me to not watch this movie when it's on.
