Hello!
I built an automatic power ranking engine that I can update when I drop in new data after each sim. Here are the results after sim #2!
The power ranking formula has three components
The formula will probably be tweaked over time as I see more data.
Observation #1: We're all still trying to gauge our teams.
"Good stuff but we aren't still tinkering with it. This is who we are this year and it is by design" - said the Cairo Zamalek GM, about his 2-4 start, before running off 7 wins in his next 8 games.
"Ridiculous that we are in the 3rd group when we might have the best starting 5 in the league (and currently lead the divison over the reigning champs/a team ranked ~8 spots ahead of us)" - said the Minnesota Timberwolves GM, before going 3-4, including a 41 point loss to those aforementioned reigning champs.
"It'll be tough to try to make the playoffs." - said the Madrid GM before sim 2, and is now sitting at #2 in the Eurasian Conference.
"The team looks well positioned to try and defend its division title." - said Piraeus Olympiacos GM, before dropping 4 of 8, including one to the KK Partizan who preceeded to lose 7 games in a row after defeating Olympiacos.
Observation #2: Some teams who struggled early have correctly faster than others
This is more true for Harlem than anyone, who after losing 5 straight to open the season proceeded to link together a league best 10 game win streak. They have shot up 22 spots in the power rankings. Cairo, as discussed, has shot up the league standings. Playoff teams Rio De Janeiro and Mexico City remain under .500 and are clearly struggling at this point. The Gasol injury hurts, but even without Gaosl its tough to understand a 4-8 start.
Observation #3: Some of the upstart teams look ready for the prime time, while others have come back down to earth
This is more true for Belgrade than anyone, who has lost 7 straight and dropped 21 spots. This is not encouraging for a team who also has played the 2nd easiest schedule to date. Tel Aviv Maccabi and Olimpia Milano also came crashing back down to Earth, as I suspected. The aforementioned Madrid has probably put together the strongest 2 sims of any non-playoff team thus far. Barcelona could also make a case.
Observation #4: The top American playoff teams haven't skipped a beat
Well, most of them. 4 of the top 5 American teams who had differentiated themselves last season are again each winning by an average of over 10 points per game. Alternatively, only Auckland has been able to pull that off in the Eurasian conference and the pecking order looks a lot less certain behind them on that side.
Observation #5: There is increased parity in Eurasia so far
Not many teams in Eurasia are content with waiting for the lotto. When playoff teams Beijing and Perth - who haven't changed much - are in the bottom 4 of your conference, that means your conference has improved pretty dramatically. From Maccabi adding Baylor, to KK Partizan adding Bynum, Istanbul Dischinger, and Milan Deron Williams, the conference is extremely competitive thus far, with only 5 games separating number 1 from number 15 in the conference.

The power ranking formula has three components
- Power Score: An assessment of how dominant a team is, primarily measured by their differential
- RPI Score: Measured by a teams raw winning %, strength of schedule, and strength of opponents schedules
- Recent Score: A measure of how a team is playing recently. This score will be excluded until there is enough of a baseline
The formula will probably be tweaked over time as I see more data.
